The Nintendo 3DS gets off to a rocky start, which is titled the "3DS drought" among the fandom. Come a decent price cut and several critically-acclaimed titles like Super Mario 3D Land, however, its performance quickly does a 180 and it proves its worth as another wildly successful Nintendo handheld. A gigantic earthquake and tsunami off the eastern coast of Japan impact the video game industry, delaying software releases. iOS 5 gets released, allowing games to not only be multiplayer, but also give you notifications. Android 3.0 and 4.0 come out as well. THQ's uDraw suffers a sharp decline after its launch for other seventh-generation console systems, with production stopping into the next year and becomes one of the factors towards the company's decline.

Minecraft is also "completed" this year, though huge content updates continue to happen to this day. Duke Nukem Forever is finally released after it's lengthy 15-year development.
