Specifically: Needs a good clean-up in terms of grammar, organization, and formatting.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the final entry in the Modern Warfare subseries (if Modern Warfare 2019 isn't considered). With the death of our main character from the first game, a ridiculous ending, and a new developer co-developing with Infinity Ward, it ultimately proved to be successful in terms of sales.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • The Spec Ops level "Little Bros" refers to the main character with Sandman's callsign, Metal 0-1, although Call of Duty Wiki mentions they are not the same character. Verify, and if true, add that this suggests Sandman was originally intended for the level.
  • COD Wiki mentions here there is a failsafe for spawning with an empty multiplayer class. Verify if true and add.

Easter Egg

On Overwatch, inside one of the control rooms of a crane is a chicken. It can only be seen in-game via Theater Mode, Spectator Mode, or by visiting the area with a Recon Drone.

Cut Weapons

Hmmm...
To do:
  • The AK74u was apparently cut due to lack of RAM in multiplayer. Find the source for this and mention it.
  • Clarify the AUG weapon model sentence.

  • AT4 - A cut rocket launcher first seen in an E3 gameplay video for "Black Tuesday". Has a pickup icon and Create-a-Class image.
  • AK74u: Used in the campaign, but has an unused Create-a-Class icon for multiplayer.
  • AUG HBAR: Has a killfeed icon that appears to be taken straight from Modern Warfare 2. It is possible to have the AUG's weapon model over one of the existing weapons by applying a Camouflage to it.
  • F2000: Its Modern Warfare 2 Create-a-Class icon is present. The gun is used for a unused killstreak as a Target Lacer.
  • Intervention: Create-a-Class icon from Modern Warfare 2 remains.
  • Lee-Enfield: Strangely enough the Lee-Enfield's HUD icon from Call of Duty 2 is in the game's files.
  • M9: While this weapon is used in the campaign mission "Goalpost", its Create-a-Class icon from Modern Warfare 2 is also present in the game's files.
  • M21 EBR: The M21 EBR has an unused Create-a-Class icon (from Modern Warfare 2), texture sheet, and bump map. All the images are named "iw5" meaning they were created for the MW3 Engine.
  • M40A3: The Create-a-Class icon from Call of Duty 4 is in the game.
  • M93 Raffica: Its Create-a-Class icon is in the game's files. The weapon's Create-a-Class slot is still present, but the weapon files are not.
  • M240: Used by Makarov's terrorist in a flashback of the mission "No Russian" but has an unused texture sheet and bump map and was seen in early screenshots. It is used in the Wii version during Goalpost for some reason.
  • M249 SAW: Like most cut weapons it has its Create-a-Class icon (from Call of Duty 4) remaining.
  • M1014: It appears that the M1014 was supposed to make an appearance in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as the pickup icon, Create-a-Class icon from Call of Duty 4, and game files remain (unchanged from its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appearance though). It was probably cut in the late stages of the game's development.
  • M1911: While it appears throughout the campaign, albeit in an unusable form, is has an unused Create-a-Class icon from Call of Duty 4 and a Create-a-Class icon with a silencer on it.
  • MG42: HUD icon from Call of Duty 1 and 2 remains. Throughout the series, this icon has been used as a placeholder icon for stationary machine guns.
  • MK12-SPR: A M4A1 with a RSASS scope and bipod, likely intended for the mission "Eye of the Storm", where an actual RSASS appears. This also may have been used in Multiplayer on the removed Heli Sniper killstreak.
  • MP44: Its Create-a-Class icon and HUD icon from Call of Duty 4 can be found.
  • PP2000: Has a Create-a-Class icon and a bump map.
  • R700: Has a Create-a-Class icon.
  • Ranger: Only a Create-a-Class icon remains.
  • RPD: All that remains is a HUD icon. Likely replaced by the PKP Pecheneg.
  • TAR-21: Create-a-Class icon, a texture sheet, and a bump map can be found.
  • TMP: The TMP Create-a-Class icon from Modern Warfare 2 can be found and is named "mp9_v2". The filename for the TMP in Modern Warfare 2 is "MP9".
  • Vector: Could be seen in some trailers. All that remains in the game is a texture sheet and a bump map.
  • WA2000: Only a texture sheet for the scope and its bump map remain.
  • Mini Uzi: Has unused textures and a Create-a-Class image that is the same as the PM-9.

Unused Attachment Combinations

Do any of these unused attachment combinations have unused weapon files that list weapon stats?

The following weapons have unused compatibility with certain attachments. Gameplay of all of these guns except the AA-12 can be seen in this video. All secondary weapons compatible with more than one attachment have the HUD name "<weapon> Custom", which normally does not appear due to these weapons not being compatible with the Attachment Proficiency.

  • G18 Akimbo + Extended Mags - Increases magazine size from 20 to 30.

  • FMG9 Akimbo + Extended Mags - Increases magazine ammo from 36 to 54.
  • PKP Pecheneg Heartbeat Sensor
  • M60E4 Heartbeat Sensor - The Heartbeat Sensor is strangely attached in front of the ammunition box, which largely obstructs most of the screen.
  • The AA-12 is compatible with the Heartbeat Sensor. This can actually be seen in the Special Ops level "Milehigh Jack" via a glitch where if an enemy holding an AA-12 is killed during the segment where the plane shakes, their weapon will suddenly gain all attachments, including the Heartbeat Sensor, but will be unobtainable.

Unused Weapon Stats

The following weapons in multiplayer have damage drop off ranges defined in their weapon files despite their damage not varying with range. In the below table, the "Max" column specifies the maximum range after which damage will drop off and the "Min" column specifies the range where the damage drop off stops and after which the weapon will inflict its minimum damage value.

Cut Weapon Camouflages

8 unused camouflages remain in the game's files, most of which appear to be leftover from Modern Warfare 2. These camouflages are used by the AUG by modding it into the game.

Unused ACR Camouflage

On an interesting note, the ACR has an unused white camo. Either this camo was an early version of the Snow or Winter camo, or this was supposed to be the cut Arctic camo.

Unused Pointstreaks

Team Ammo Refill

Check the code for the following:
  • Are there any remnants for how many points this would have required?
  • Does it only replenish one grenade launcher round? This is what is shown when first used in the video.
  • Does it only replenish bullet ammo up to max starting reserve ammo, ignoring bullets missing from the current magazine?

Team Ammo Refill is a Support Poinstreak that when used will refill the bullet ammo, underbarrel ammo, tactical grenade ammo, and lethal equipment ammo for the user and all players on the user's team. The notification text for this Poinstreak when it is used is "Team Ammo Refill". This Poinstreak has no icon nor announcer lines. A video of this Pointstreak can be seen here.

  • Double check that these codenames actually correspond to icons in the files.
  • Discuss what these deathstreaks could possibly have been.

Modern Warfare 3 contains four unused deathstreak icons. The last icon reuses the icon of the RPG-7 x 2 perk from Modern Warfare. Codenames are taken from the filenames of the icons.

Unseen Map Content

Hmmm...
To do:
Overwatch appears to have a lot of content placed outside the map that cannot be seen.
  • The Overwatch multiplayer map contains some details that cannot be seen:
    • The Statue of Liberty is present in the background.
    • The control rooms of the cranes have a seat in them. One crane also has warning stickers on the front window.
  • On the Special Delivery Spec Ops level, there is a car placed underneath the stage. It is possible to see this car by using Sentry Guns in order to get out of the map, as shown in this video.

Grinder

A cut gamemode. Not much is known about it beside the fact that there would be a target area. Only sound files remain. Some text in the game hint that Grinder is the early name for the gamemode Drop Zone, as Drop Zone's internal codename is "grnd".

Unused Cinematic

The game contains an unused soundless cutscene depicting the end of the mission "Crew Expendable" from the first game that was intended for the Prologue.

Unused Models

Yuri

During the flashback to "No Russian" in this level, Yuri has a unique third person model that can only be seen by utilizing cheats. Interestingly enough, other playable characters' third person models are usually from models in multiplayer, and missing their heads, whereas Yuri's model is complete but slightly discolored.

Inside the IWD archives of the game are 3 unused files which were meant to be used within this mission in the post-credits scene.

References In Memory

Within the memory of the game while this mission is being played, there are some old left over strings of text referencing this possible ending.

  • mysterious_stranger_rimlight: An object used in that scene. This item is referenced again later down in memory but with co-ordinates listed alongside the name, presumably telling the game where to load the item into the level map.
  • mus_start_stranger: A piece of code used to start the music for the cutscene.
  • dub_finale_shadowman_enter & dub_finale_shadowman_exit: References for the two unused sound effects still within the files of the mission.
  • start_stranger: A reference to the level scripts to begin the sequence.
  • dubai_finale_stranger_appears: A reference to another possible audio file. However, this file isn't in any of the archives. It's possible this file was deleted before the developers decided to scrap the entire sequence.

Cut Spec Ops Missions

  • Defend_Ferris

Lobby image for the cut/unused Spec Ops mission, "defend_ferris".

Judging by the name, one can assume this mission would have had the player(s) defending a Ferris wheel. Who would want to attack a Ferris wheel anyway?! There are two versions of this image present in the game's files. One is named "so_defendferris_lobby.iwi", and the other is named "so_dlc1.iwi". The Ferris wheel in the image is Pripyat's Ferris wheel from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

  • Assaultmine

The Lobby image shares some similarities to the Spec Ops mission "Fire Mission".

Oddities

To do:
  • The following weapons in the game have attachment irregularities. If there isn't a reason for them to have this, add it.
    • Back on the Grid: Yuri's AK-47 with Silencer and Red Dot Sight - More ADS zoom that normal. (source)
    • Smack Town (Spec Ops): M4A1 Red Dot Sight - Has ACOG ADS zoom.
    • Kill Switch (Spec Ops): SCAR-L has longer draw time.
  • On "Down the Rabbit Hole", pulling out the predator drone laptop while falling will cause the player to take no fall damage. A video of this can be seen here.
  • On Kill Switch, Ozone's SCAR-L Suppressed has a different firing sound from the one used in multiplayer. It isn't apparent why there is a difference.
  • While the in-game description for the "Aground" Face-Off map says it takes place just off the Irish coast, the Xbox Marketplace description says it takes place in the Orkney Islands in Scotland. This difference suggests the Marketplace description might have been an early one.

    Version Differences

    As with the rest of the Call of Duty series, there were a number of differences when the game was ported to the Wii which include:

    • No killcams.
    • Private match customization is more limited.
    • No downloadable content.
    • Players have an "Ally (friend) Code" that is for other players to send ally requests to them if they have not encountered each other in multiplayer.
    • No Special Ops missions, though Survival mode is present.
    • The Recon Drone, Predator Missile, Reaper, and AC-130 killstreaks are not available (although the Predator Missile is available through modding).
    • The "Prologue" and "Blood Brothers" (interactive cutscenes on other consoles) are simply cutscenes.
    • Gun Game, Infection, One in the Chamber, Team Juggernaut, and Drop Zone game modes are not available normally, but are playable through modding.
    • Winter and Marine camos are unlocked after prestiging once, instead of being unlocked through ELITE, which isn't available on Wii.
    • Breakable glass windows only appear in the maps Carbon and Outpost.
    • The SitRep perk works differently. Instead of seeing fake Care Packages highlighted in red, a skull appears over them.
    • Some weapons have different reloading sounds.
    • You can't see Price's reflection against the broken glass in the "Dust to Dust" mission.
    • Sandman has no sunglasses.
    • Makarov has short hair.
    • Downturn has no lightposts.
    • On Bootleg, during Domination the B flag is in the middle of the map instead of in the street.

    Regional Differences

    • In the US a promotion was done with Mountain Dew and Doritos to offer Double XP codes with specially marked product packages. Outside the US, these codes were unobtainable. A full list of products and codes can be seen here.

    French Version

    • In the Wii version, the "Intel" text that appears during the loading of a multiplayer match is reused from the two previous Modern Warfare games.
    • The Barrett .50cal is called Barrett.50.
    • Pro Perks are rendered as "<perk> (Pro)" instead of "<perk> Pro".

    Japanese Version

    • Like Black Ops, the Japanese version was released in two versions: one dubbed in Japanese and one with English audio and Japanese subtitles. The subtitled version was released on the Japanese launch date, November 17, while the dubbed version arrived later in December.
    • In the briefing for "Mind the Gap" the character voices are processed more to sound like they are coming over radio, significantly more so than the English.

    Russian Version

    • The Five-seven is called FN 5.7.
    • The following weapon names were rendered in Cyrillic in prior games but were rendered in the Latin script in this one.
      • Desert Eagle
      • .44 Magnum
      • Skorpion
      • Striker
      • Barrett .50 - This is the name used for the Barrett .50cal in the Russian games. In Modern Warfare 2, the name also had quotation marks around "Barrett".
    • The Dragunov's name was changed. In prior games this weapon was called СВД SVD, but was changed to Драгунов Dragunov in this game. The following games would alternate between both names, calling the sniper rifle SVD in Black Ops 2 and Dragunov in Modern Warfare 2019.
    • While the "Autumn" camouflage was a new camouflage and not based on any prior camouflages, this is not the case for the Russian version, as the Fall Camouflage is called "Autumn" (Осенний).
    • The Blast Shield perk appears to be named after the Blast Shield equipment from Modern Warfare 2. In the Russian version, they do not have the same name.
