Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors. This page contains content that is not safe for work or other locations with the potential for personal embarrassment. Such as: Some vulgar language. |
Duke Nukem Forever (often shorted to DNF by many) was intended to be the series' fourth main game after Duke Nukem 3D, but ended up spending well over a decade in development hell, going through so many concepts, developers, staff changes, engine swaps, and pushed-back release dates that the game became a punchline...but come out it did, including a "Balls of Steel" collector's edition containing all sorts of nifty stuff and an announcement that GameStop would honor pre-orders from past years (which ended up including a customer who had preordered the game in 2001).
The finished game itself, on the other hand...let's just say the wait probably wasn't worth it for most. Especially for a certain gray cat.
To do: See To-Do subpage for what needs to get done.

Notes |
Internal Names The names of assets in the files. Theres a few oddly-named ones here! |
Regional Differences Changes made to the game in various regions. CERO sure hates fun, don't they? |
Downloadable Content Unused stuff in the two DLCs, Hail to the Icons Parody Pack and The Doctor Who Cloned Me. |
Unused Weapons
Nuclear Missile Ammo
There was going to be the nuclear option for the RPG with an alternative ammo type. It has a whole set of animations, textures and a model but isn't used. The nuke ammo can be gained by using commands in the command console or on a test map. It is not certain which mode the weapon was intended to appear.
When loading it, Duke will hit the butt of the ammo against the gun and insert it. A voice will then count down from three before the gun can fire.
Flamethrower
There are references to a flamethrower in the files but all that seems left of it is just some audio. A flamethrower is seen in the 2001 build.

Unused Text
From engine.int and the 3D Realms days, presumably before Steamworks auto-updating was added:

From dukeed.int, it seems the game's schoolboy humor even extended to the editor:

Unused Models
To do:
|
Duke's Mighty Foot
A model of a simple box named mightyfoot_melee.msh exists in a folder of the same name in the Weapons directory of the meshes, suggesting that Duke's signature melee attack was set to return. It's very likely a leftover from earlier versions of the game.
Test Models
A few test models are present in the files in sm_lighttestbed/primitives. A file called allprimitives.smsh contains multiple models in one, but some of the models do have their own separate files.
Ammo Boxes
A whole bunch of models for ammo pickups that aren't used can be found in sm_class_dukeitems, seemingly replaced with EDF ammo crates and taking ammo from dropped weapons.
- Pistol_AmmoPickup.smsh
- Devastator_Ammo.smsh
- RPG_Ammo.smsh
- Ripper_Ammo.smsh
- Railgun_AmmoPickup.smsh
- Shrinkray_Ammo.smsh
Even the unused Nuke weapon has its own ammo box called nuke_ammno.smsh
Demo and Trailer Leftovers
To do: Add that ESRB notice here. |
The trailer and upsell screen, along with the standard ESRB notice from the demo, are still in the files.
Demo_trailer.bik | upsellScreen.bik |
---|---|
There is also a model (known as duke_trailer.msh) of Duke with a textureless head and hands used for the trailer, plus his lines for the very same trailer.

Unused Cinematics
Unused Logo Cinematics
Logo cinematics for 3D Realms and Triptych. All companies involved were featured in a single cinematic. This version of the 3D Realms cinematic was seen in some of the early trailers for the game.

Other Unused Cinematics
To do: Check if ezmail.screensaver.bik and tripminedisplay.bik are unused. Theses can be seen in various pre-release videos, but I'm not sure if they're anywhere in the final game. |
DukeNukemForeverLogo.bik | Logo_DNF.bik |
---|---|
Two earlier versions of the Duke Nukem Forever logo, both seen in the December 2007 teaser and the E3 2001 trailer respectively.
There is also "Load_Generic.bik" found in Duke Nukem Forever's ".../Movies/" directory. In it is a two-frame video showing an image of two Duke Nukems, using Mark Skelton's 2007 design:
Unused Audio
To do: Could use some investigation (such as whenever the French lines are unused in the dub, what the other file is that starts with "Duke" rather the "DUKE" is and if the lava sound is used on the Inferno map added in DLC). |
Do note that there aren't any subtitles leftover for much of this audio.
Duke Nukem
...But what does it mean? This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation! Notes: Transliterate what is said in the "Transcript" section and translate what it means, along with providing the (closest) equivalent line in English in the "Notes" section. |

---|---|---|---|
DUKE_Map11c_WowCanBreathe_01.mp3 | "Wow I can breathe!" | Phew, Duke can breathe again! While he does complain that going in the water will ruin his hair, this line is never played. | |
Duke_BallsOfSteel_01.mp3 | "I've got balls of steel." | A line that could have been used in multiple places but isn't. It's worth pointing out that this and another used audio file start with "Duke" rather than "DUKE" (which is what the rest of Duke's voice lines use). | |
DUKE_GotMessKill_04.mp3 | French (Needs transliteration/translation) | A random line of Duketalk dubbed into French. | |
DUKE_GotKill_09.mp3 | Ditto |
General Graves
A pair of placeholder lines for General Graves, referencing something that does not happen in the game. Juding from their filenames and content, the most likely event this was intended for is the level The Duke Cave just before the next level in the turret section against the Mothership.

EDF Soldiers
To do: The EDF might have more unused audio. |
The Earth Defence Force has much of their voice lines recorded with and without a mask muffling effect. Most of this audio are alternative versions of used voice lines.

Unused Graphics
DLC Test?
There exist two textures in dt_dlc-test/Surface that depicted camouflage and a cracked surface (likely sandstone). Judging from the filenames, these were used as test graphics for the DLC, likely Hail to the Icons Parody Pack.
My Digs Babes
Found in Menu/MP are a bunch of placeholder graphics for the unlockable Babes found in My Digs. Sgt. Peppa and Trudy Uprights have simple placeholder text while Funky Nefertiti has a render of Miso Ho'ney with an afro painted on.
Nuke HUD Graphics
Grahpics for the nuke ammo found in dt_hud/ingame_hud:
These are found in dt_hud/Inventory:
The "_hl2" suffixed icon could be a reference to Half-Life 2, as its ammo pickup icons have a similar style.
Build Dates
To do: These were likely changed more. Add how it was changed from the following: Hail to the Icons DLC, the v1.01 patch and the Mac port. Also add build info for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions and where it is located in those versions. |
The build date of the Windows version can be found in BuildInfo.CFG. It has been modified during the game's updates; this is how it was at launch.

Revisional Differences
To do: Likely much more that got changed in these patches. Speaking of which, were there anymore patches beside these? |
A patch for the Windows version was released on August 2nd, 2011, updating the game to V1.01 with quality-of-life improvements.
- 4-weapon inventory option in single player campaign
- MP Server favorites
- Dedicated server overhaul
- FOV can be modified
- Change VOIP to push-to-talk (bandwidth fix)
- VAC anti-cheat system enabled
- Support for Japanese Steam ID’s for PC release in Japan
- Auto-aim fix
- Blood effects on surfaces behind enemies when shot
- Steam.exe no longer uses an unusually high amount of CPU
- Texture quality improvements
- Fixes to prevent single player and multiplayer save data corruption
- Leaderboard exploit fixed
- AMD Dual-Core Optimizer no longer automatically installed (fixes rare bugs with Intel processors)
- Crash/compatibility fixes and other minor bugs
The equivalent patch for the Mac version (released on September 6, 2011) added many of these features along with cross platform multiplayer on PC.
