See, this is why game preservation is important.
This game is defunct.
Do note the game no longer works at all without modifications. This is most likely due to the game's servers being shut down. As a result, further official developments with the game are unlikely to happen.

Nintendo eShop was the application you could use to download games for your Nintendo 3DS... at least until purchases were shut down on March 28, 2023, with the ability to add funds getting tossed even sooner, leaving many eShop exclusives to be unobtainable without mods.

Considering Nintendo's infamous track record with preservation and the fact that certain physical games go for high prices, the closure was controversial (to put it lightly) and semi-inevitably led many users to piracy.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • "Debug" layout archive.
  • Pre-release images.
  • There are a bunch of different versions.
  • English text differences.
  • Revision.txt (contains "000000" in the Europe (v16384) version)
  • Dummy music file directory.

English Translation Differences
The US and European translators can't seem to agree with each other.

Dummy Music

boss_dummy.aac

The title theme from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, possibly used as a dummy track for the SpotPass-distributed background music. It is stored within the /bossBgmTest directory.

The loop points for this audio is stored inside sound/TigerSound.bcsar, and it is incredibly short. It starts in "864" and ends in "12192".

Debug Directory

Within the /debug directory, there is a text file called revision.txt containing the following:

000000

Unused Game Characteristics Icons

Hmmm...
To do:
Research this a tad more.

Within /database/america/characteristic in the eShop's files are six game icons for showing certain features of games. Three are used (Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Mii, and Nintendo Network), while the other three are not (Touch! Generations DS, Touch! Generations Wii, and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play).

Internal Project Name

Nintendo eShop has the codename Tiger, according to the sound archive's filename (TigerSound.bcsar).

Regional Differences

The Japanese eShop allowed you to use JCB for Credit Card payments, as well as allowing (on N3DS models only) different forms of NFC payment using Japanese cards from various companies that work on the FeliCa RFID card system. As of the iPhone 7 or Apple Watch Series 2 in Japan, the iPhone 8 and Apple Watch Series 3 internationally, and the Pixel 3 in Japan (along with some other Android phones), you were able to add FeliCa cards to NFC wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay to allow for payment using a mobile device. Users lost the ability to add funds via Credit Card and NFC FeliCa cards like Suica in the Japanese eShop on January 18, 2022. You could still add funds through a connected Nintendo account, or with prepaid cards until August 29, 2022.

Europe

3DS eShop EU PaymentMethodSelection.png

As of September 2019, the ability to add funds to your eShop account/NNID in Europe was removed, likely due to the implementation of PSD2 in the European Union, requiring strong authentication (usually an online banking login after inputting credit card details) to be used for all Credit Card transactions made online. While this was not confirmed as the reason for the removal, the date of the removal lines up with the month of required PSD2 enforcement in the EU. You could still add funds through a connected Nintendo account, or with prepaid cards until August 29, 2022.

North America

As of May 23, 2022, the ability to use credit cards was removed from the North American eShop in preparation for the closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops the following March. On August 29, 2022, eShop Card support was removed.

Interestingly, the search feature can still be used to search for games, though everything will be listed as unavailable.
