The PlayStation Portable was Sony's first foray into the world of portable gaming devices. In true PlayStation form, it boasted features and technical specifications that were in many ways superior to its primary competition at the time, the Nintendo DS, though its disc-based UMD media format proved to be rather slow and power-hungry compared to traditional ROM cartridges.

Due in part to rampant piracy and some questionable business decisions by Sony (hello, PSP Go), it was all but abandoned in most parts of the world. However, it enjoyed some relative success in Japan and Europe, thanks to a decent supply of good low-budget and niche titles.
