This page details one or more prototype versions of Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium.
Four localization prototypes from 1994 were released as part of drx's massive February 23, 2008 prototype dump:
- The May 30th prototype is the earliest, produced five months after the Japanese version was released. This build was showcased at Sega Gamer's Day 1994 on June 2. The translation is rough at points, with questionable grammar and misused punctuation, but it's closer to the Japanese script than the final one.
- The June 8th prototype only has one change from the May prototype: The string "Gamers-Day_MK" is XORed in the interrupt table at 0x0000E0.
- The August 15th prototype is an intermediate version, fixing most of the mistakes in the May 30 version and rewriting most lines to their final game equivalents. There are a number of areas, though, that an editor hasn't gone through, and where the May 30 script is still used.
- The October 27th prototype, with the exception of a scant few lines and a few entries in the shops' item name table, is identical to the final version.

- Underlined words were changed or rearranged between scripts.
- Italicized words are names that were changed between versions. The final names will be used for comparison's sake.

Gameplay Differences
There are a couple non-textual differences in these prototypes.
- As detailed on the main page, the Acacia (in the Sacred Sword Cave) and ShadMirage (in The Edge) enemies were removed from the final English release. They're still present in the May and June prototypes; the August 15 build is the first one to remove those enemies.
- A collection of dialogue pointer bugs make the game impossible to complete in the August 15 prototype. All of these occur on Rykros:
- Talking to De-Vars brings up Sa-Lews' dialogue.
- Talking to Sa-Lews brings up the illusion Alys' dialogue.
- Talking to the fake Alys will start printing the Daughter AI's intro dialogue, mid-conversation.
