May & August Scripts
What a pig this dog is! Give it food and it'll eat and eat!
Final Script
What a pig this dog is! It never stops eating!
May & August Scripts
Gee, what a dirty little mutt!
Final Script
Gee, what a fat little mutt!
Translation Notes
They really wanted to emphasize that this is a fat dog, since he's important for a sidequest later on in the game.
May Script
I'm also confident our child will be safe with Saya.
Final Script
I'm confident our child will be safe with Saya.

May Script
See that little island in the big lake near here? The building on that island has been called Soldiers' Temple since long ago. Once, I swam over there, but there were monsters all over the island! It was frightening and I came rushing home. See, here's where I hurt myself.
Final Script
See that little island in the big lake near here? The building on that island has been called Soldiers' Temple since long ago. Once, I swam over there, but there were monsters all over the island! It was frightening and I came rushing home.
Translation Notes
Not sure what part of his person he's showing off here, but the later drafts deleted that line anyway.
May Script
That lake there? It was created by water filling a hole created by a large meteorite crashing into the earth a long time ago. Unbelievable, huh?
August Script
See the lake there ? It was created by water filling a hole created by a large meteorite crashing into the earth a long time ago. Unbelievable, huh?
Final Script
That lake there? It was created by a meteor that struck the planet. The crater filled with water long ago. Unbelievable, huh?
Translation Notes
The final draft fixed a long run-on sentence here, but messed up in astronomical terms; Since the object made impact with the ground, "meteorite" is the correct term, not "meteor."
Objects
May Script
This must be a so-called floodgate.
Final Script
This must be a floodgate.
Translation Notes
Chaz Ashley: Floodgate critic.
Residences
May Script
Here's some cheap soda all in in a row.
Final Script
The cupboard is full of orange soda.
Translation Notes
This is wine in the Japanese version, not soda. This is another line that pops up in various Motavian towns, and that the later English drafts tried to make unique lines for in each town.
Armor Store
NPCs

May Script
Hahn! It's good to see you home! Pa goes on like that, but really he's very proud of you.
August Script
Hahn! It's good to see you home! your Pa goes on like that, but really he's very proud of you.
Final Script
Hahn! It's good to see you home! Your Pa goes on like that, but really he's very proud of you.
May Script
I know, I know, Ma... But my feelings won't change!
Final Script
I know, Ma... But my feelings won't change!
May Script
The master talks like that about his son, Hahn, but... It's thanks to Hahn sending us the scientific literature that he has completed that a rural place like this is able to sell such splendid weapons.
Final Script
Hahn's Pa talks like that, but... It's thanks to Hahn sending us the scientific literature that he has completed that a rural place like this is able to sell such splendid weapons.
Translation Notes
This woman is apparently apprenticing under Hahn's father, a detail that's missing from later drafts.
Objects
May Script
Hmmm. I wonder if this is a book about raw materials for armor?
Final Script
Hmmm. Appears to be a book about raw materials for armor.
Tool Store
May Script
Oh yes. If only our son was as bright as Hahn next door.
Final Script
Oh yes. If only our son was as bright as Hahn.
May Script
It can't be helped, don't you think? After all being a child of that mother...
August Script
Once I enter the Academy, my mother will be proud of me.
Final Script
It can't be helped, don't you think? After all being a child of that mother...
Translation Notes
Now that's certainly strange. This is one of two dialogues that was completely rewritten in the August draft, then reverted back to the original line for the final version.
Saya's House
NPCs
May Script
I...I want to use the bathroom, but I'll have to hold it 'til class is over. I'm sick and tired of being teased and called silly names!
Final Script
I...I want to use the bathroom, but I'll have to hold it 'til class is over. I don't want to miss a thing Saya is teaching.
Translation Notes
This child talks about being teased twice more throughout the game, so it's odd why that last line was rewritten.
---
May Script
I have a feeling that the recent ruinous environmental disaster is due to the deliberate undertakings of one person...
Final Script
I think the recent environmental disaster was deliberately caused by someone...
What a smart aleck kid...
Translation Notes
Chaz's response makes more sense in the May draft...
May Script
Thank you for taking care of Hahn, Alys and Chaz.
Final Script
Thank you, again, for taking care of Hahn.
Objects
May Script
Hmmm 'No Work No Food'...
Final Script
Translation Notes
The book's contents are completely different...maybe the editor thought this was too harsh of a lesson.
May Script
It's a blackboard. Wow, it's authentic!
Final Script
Wow, It's an authentic blackboard.
May Script
It's a children's picture book. 'The Armed Ant and Six-legged Spider'...
Final Script
Look at this picture book. 'The Eight Armed Ant and the Six-legged Spider'...
Translation Notes
The translation really messed up here. The title is supposed to be "The Armored Ant and the Grass Killer", the Japanese names of two enemies from Phantasy Star II which were an ant and a grasshopper/mantis respectively. Get it?
May Script
It's a children's picture book. 'The Ceramic Soldiers'...
Final Script
Look at this picture book. 'The Ceramic Soldiers'...
Translation Notes
The book descriptions always start out the same way in the May draft. The August prototype adds a second opening that alternates with the original line.
May Script
It's a children's picture book. 'Motavians Are Disqualified'...
Final Script
Look at this picture book. 'A Day with Ecco.'
Translation Notes
The original Japanese title translates to "Motavian Shikkaku", a parody of the 1948 book "Ningen Shikkaku" (Translated as No Longer Human in the English release, or, literally, "Disqualified from Being Human".)
This was replaced by a Sega reference in the final draft, making it a good fit with the Golden Axe and Sonic books in the same room.
May Script
It's a children's picture book. 'Biography of Great Person Doctor Lubetz'
Final Script
Look at this picture book. 'Biography of the Great Professor Lubetz'
Translation Notes
Another discrepancy introduced in the final draft - there's a statue of Doctor Lubetz at Motavia Academy in Piata.
It's not a good idea to open other people's cabinets... but...in this case...
May & August Scripts
Final Script
Translation Notes
Chaz is a bit bolder in the final script.
May Script
What a gigantic mirror...Hey! What's a picture of Hahn doing here?
Final Script
What a gigantic mirror...Hey! Look, a picture of Hahn!

The other day, there was a tremendous amount of smoke coming from the west! I wonder if there was a big fire somewhere? It's rather worrisome.

Armor Store
May Script
So Hahn, you've learnt to say some mighty cheeky things. It seems like just yesterday that you were taking your first baby steps.
Final Script
So Hahn, he has learnt to say some mighty cheeky things. It seems like just yesterday that he was taking his first baby steps.
Translation Notes
Hahn's not in the party at this point, so the dialogue was rewritten accordingly.
Saya's House
May Script
Yeah, so he's hurt, but Saya is one good natured person to stay by the side of a hunter that her fiancee hired!
Final Script
Yeah, so she's hurt, but Saya is one good-natured person to stay by the side of a hunter that her fiancee hired!
Translation Notes
Ah, pronoun trouble.
