This is a sub-page of Proto:Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium.
Gumbious Temple
...or the basement, which is all that's left of it. An aged bishop sits in the middle of a darkened room.
May & August Scripts
It's good of you to come. I am the bishop of the Gumbious Temple which had stood here for two thousand years.
Final Script
It's good you came. I am the bishop of the Gumbious Temple, which stood here for two thousand years.
Translation Notes
The translation is incorrect in both drafts: It's the bishop that's 2000 years old, not the temple (わしは、二千年の時を生きる ガンビアス大寺院の大僧正…。). As an NPC noted earlier in the game, the Corona Tower was in this spot two-thousand years ago.
(Source: Athena)
Bishop, what on earth is going on?
The temple has vanished without a trace.
We've defeated Dark Force. Isn't that the end of our work?
'The Profound Darkness' still exists.
What's 'The Profound Darkness?'
May & August Scripts
Is is the root of all evil that has wrought death and destruction in Algo since long ago. Dark Force is but the tools of that existence.

May & August Scripts
It has become something that is beyond your control. That's why, 'The Profound Darkness' stirs. If it can't lay its hands on it, its not going to let you get a hold of it.
Final Script
It has become something that is beyond your control. That's why, The Profound Darkness stirs. If it can't lay its hands on it, its not going to let you get ahold of it.
Translation Notes
The first line should be, "It has become something beyond its control.", with the second "it" being The Profound Darkness.
Bishop, we don't understand. What is 'Rykros?'
The bishop doesn't know exactly what Rykros is or where it's at, only that the Aero-Prism will reveal its location. Rune, having inherited Lutz's memories, remembers Alis' crew using it 2000 years ago.
May & August Scripts
Chaz! We're have to return to Motavia!

Chaz! We have to return to Motavia!

Oh, the temple on the island in the lake near Krup!
We need a vehical that can travel across the lake. I will contact Demi immediately.
Translation Notes
Woof. Pretty bad misspelling here that's present in every draft, and in an important scene to boot.
Bishop, thank you. We'll be sure to return the Eclipse Torch.
So, you will go to Rykros?
May & August Scripts
Yes. After all, we've come thus far.
Final Script
Yes. After all, we've come this far.
May & August Scripts
I see..that means I was also able to carry out an important mission... All I could do was point you towards Rykros. It's up to you, to make history. I have my hopes on you youthful ones.
Final Script
I see...then I have done my part... All I could do was point you towards Rykros. It's up to you to shape history.
All hope is on you youthful ones.
Translation Notes
The last line was originally something like, "I entrust you with this, young..." (頼むぞ、若いの…。), trailing off, which is why Chaz follows up by saying his name.
Chaz. My name is Chaz Ashley.
May & August Scripts
I see. I've entrusted you with the mission, Chaz Ashley.
Final Script
I see. I entrust you with this mission, Chaz Ashley.

Motavia Spaceport
We have been awaiting you, Master Wren. Long time no see. I'm glad that you're all looking so well!
May Script
Demi, how is the condition in Motavia?
Final Script
Demi, what is the condition of Motavia?
May Script
It's all green. There are no abnormalities. Everything you requested is already on stand-by.
Final Script
All systems on hold. There are no abnormalities. Everything you requested is already on stand-by.
Translation Notes
Someone on the editing team must have thought that the player would forget what the Motavian systems were doing at this point.
Demi presents the rest of the party with the Hydrofoil, a seaworthy vehicle brought in from the Machine Center and completely overhauled.
OK, Chaz, let's get a move on and head for the Soldier's Temple!
Right! Demi, are you ready yet?
May Script
I'm sorry, but at this point I don't think I can be of use to you. The stabilization of all the systems in Motavia will take some time.
Final Script
I'm sorry, but at this point I don't think I can be of use to you. The restart of all the systems in Motavia will take some time.
Translation Notes
Later English drafts remember that there's more than one system on Motavia, but forgets what Demi is doing with the systems.
May Script
Oh...that's a pity. But good luck to you too!
Final Script
Oh...that's a pity. But good luck to you, too.

Final Script
OK, let's head for the Soldiers' Temple!
Motavia Overworld
To the east of Krup, on the island of Soldiers' Temple...
Huh? Are you guys here to inspect the ruins?
Well, er, yes, we are, but who on earth are you?
May Script
Forgive me for not introducing myself earlier. My name is Seth and I'm a traveling archeologist. I've come here upon hearing that there are ruins of an ancient temple here, but there are monsters in the cave that leads there.
Final Script
Forgive me for not introducing myself earlier. My name is Seth. I'm a traveling archeologist. I came here in search of the ruins of an ancient temple, but there are monsters in the cave that leads to it.
May Script
Hmm, the temple... just what we're after.
Final Script
Hmm, the temple... just where we're going.
Ah, I knew it! How fortunate! If that's where you're headed, would you allow me to come with you? I do have confidence in my skills. And I don't intend to be a nuisance.
The Phantasy squadron agrees to let him tag along.
Island Cave
While making their way through a fairly unremarkable cave, Seth sucks up to the stars of this phantasy.
May Script
Oh my, you guys are so strong! You must have felled many a monster up until now!
Final Script
Oh my, you guys are so strong! You must have felled many a monster by now!
Huh? Well, not really... Hee, hee, I'm embarrassed.
Here he goes again!
May Script
But that was just splendid! I would love to share that strength with you!
Final Script
But that was just splendid! I would love to have that kind of strength!
May Script
This is the result of many hour of training. You can become strong too if you put effort in it!
Final Script
This is the result of many hours of training. You can become strong too if you put effort into it!
Hmm...training. Interesting!
When did you ever do any training, Chaz?
After a bit more of that, they get through the cave and reach Soldiers' Temple.
Soldiers' Temple
Chaz takes the Aero-Prism from the temple. As soon as he goes back outside, the Aero-Prism starts glowing.
Wow! It's blindingly bright!
May Script
Oh, how observant. Chaz! Hold the Aero-Prism up to the sky!
Final Script
Oh, how observant. Hold the Aero-Prism up to the sky!
He does, and it shoots a beam of light up through and well beyond the skies. As soon as this happens, Seth screams and transforms into...
It can't be! Does this mean that Dark Force has been mascarading as a human? That evil-minded monster!
Translation Notes
Yes, this should be "masquerading". It was like this in the May prototype and they never fixed it.
May Script
Does this mean that Dark Force also evolves?
Final Script
Can Dark Force also evolve?
May Script
Final Script
Whether it evolves or not, here it comes!
Translation Notes
Someone switched Chaz and Rika's lines around in later English draft, probably to respond to Wren's line faster.
May Script
Whether he evolves or not, we just have to go for it now! Let's go!
Final Script
We have no choice! Let's go!
Even the addition of a cool sword-arm isn't enough for this Dark Force to defeat our heroes. It disintegrates like the Dark Forces before it.
This is becoming a sticky situation. Chaz, we've got to hurry to Rykros!
May Script
I bet the followers of 'The Darkness' are aware of the way to Rykros through Dark Force. They're probably already on their way en masse!
Final Script
I bet the followers of The Darkness are already aware of the way to Rykros through Dark Force. They're probably on their way there even as we speak!
You mean, they were spying on us?
May Script
Rykros...the only thing that is certain is the direction where it is located but, no doubt there must be something there that is fatal for them.
Final Script
Rykros...the only thing certain is the direction in which it is located. But no doubt there is something there that they can't afford to let us have.
Translation Notes
The May dialogue is directly from the Japanese script, but the later English dialogue pretty much says the same thing. No big deal.
May Script
That means we have to, get that something.
Final Script
So we'd better get that something.
We'll have to hurry, otherwise they'll beat us to it!
I have the direction of Rykros stored in memory. But...
The light is now extending far beyond the sky...
May Script
We'll just have to head towards it with the Landale.
Final Script
We'll just have to head towards it in the Landale.
May & August Scripts
All right, let's return to the airport! We've got to hurry!
Final Script
All right, let's return to the spaceport! We've got to hurry!
Somewhere in space
May Script
Hey, we're in outer space! Are we going in the right direction?
Final Script
Are we going in the right direction?
Translation Notes
The first line (宇宙に出ちゃったぜ?) should translate to something like, "Why did we go into space?"
May Script
Final Script
May Script
It's an island in the midair just like Rykros or Air-Castle! Or is it a man-made satellite like Zelan and Kuran?
Final Script
Is it an island like the Air-Castle, or is it an artificial satellite like Zelan or Kuran?
Translation Notes
Wow, not sure how the May draft got so mangled here. The later English drafts are accurate to the original script.
May Script
If we keep on going on this course we will leave the Algo solar system!
Final Script
If we keep to this course we will leave the Algo solar system!

May Script
We have no choice but to going.
Final Script
We have no choice but to keep going.
May Script
Yikes! It's Aero-Prism again!
Final Script
Hey! It's the Aero-Prism again!
Whew, you scared me. What happened?
It's a planet. A planet has suddenly appeared.
That can't be! There's no indication on the radar?!
It's not Motavia, it's not Dezolis... and of course it's not Parma. There is no such planet in my database!
This is... This must be Rykros!
The Landale touches down on the strange turqouise planet.
Silence Temple
The party exits the Landale to find themselves in a yellow crystalline building. When they reach the center of the building, the structure seems to fade away to an image of a spiral galaxy.
May Script
Welcome, 'Protectors,' welcome.
Final Script
Welcome, Protectors, welcome.
What was that? There's a voice reverberating in my head!
I am Le Roof of Rykros. I remain in this land to pass on the secret of the genesis of Algo.
Just as I thought, this is Rykros.
Yes it is. This is Rykros, the fourth planet in the Algo solar system.
May Script
There are only supposed to be three planets in the Algo Solar System, Motavia, Parma and Dezolis.
Final Script
There are only supposed to be three planets in the Algo solar System, Motavia, Parma, and Dezolis.
May Script
Rykros is a planet that that has been protected by a powerful invisible barrier. And no one is able to see or sense it.
Final Script
Rykros is a planet that that has been protected by a powerful and invisible barrier. No normal being is able to see or even sense it.
I didn't know such a planet existed!
Moreover, the planet's orbit is highly elliptical. It only gets close to Algo once every thousand years.
So, it's an orbit like that of a comet!
May Script
The Aero-Prism shows the way, when Rykros returns... So this is what they meant by 'return!'
Final Script
The Aero-Prism shows the way when Rykros returns... So this is what they meant by 'return!'
May Script
So that's why it was hidden until now...
Final Script
And that's why it was hidden until now...
May Script
Le Roof! We came all the way over here because we wanted to find out what we can about 'The Profound Darkness!' What is 'The Profound Darkness?' Why is it causing disasters in Algo? And, exactly where is it now? We were told that the answer to all the secrets would be found here! Now tell all!
Final Script
Le Roof! We came all the way here because we wanted to find out what we can about The Profound Darkness! What is 'The Profound Darkness?' Why is it causing disasters in Algo? And exactly where is it now? We were told that all answers would be found here! Now tell all!
Translation Notes
The second-to-last sentence should say "secret answers" (すべての秘密の答は), not "answers to all the secrets".
May Script
Hmmm... You courageous 'Protectors' who came all the way to Rykros... I have much to tell you. But first a ceremony to be held. There are two towers in Rykros, 'The Courage Tower' and 'The Strength Tower'... Go meet the guards of those two towers. At that time, I will truly recognize you as 'Protectors,' and will then tell you all about Algo.
August Script
Hmmm... You courageous Protectors who came all the way to Rykros, I have much to tell you. But first you must perform a task. There are two towers in Rykros called The Courage Tower and The Strength Tower... Go meet the guardians of those two towers. When you return, I will truly recognize you as 'Protectors,' and will then tell you all seek to know.
Final Script
Hmmm... You courageous Protectors who came all the way to Rykros, I have much to tell you. But first you must perform a task. There are two towers in Rykros called The Courage Tower and The Strength Tower... Go meet the guardians of those two towers. When you return, I will truly recognize you as 'Protectors,' and will then tell you all you seek to know.
Translation Notes
The process went from a "ritual" (Implying it's standard procedure) to a "task" (Which could be standard or could just be something Le Roof just thought up.)
Yes, I am. But please understand. This is absolutely necessary.
May Script
I guess we'll have to go along. Come on guys, let's go!
Final Script
I guess we'll have to do it. Come on guys, let's go!
May Script
Please hurry. Already, the hand behind the 'Darkness' is stirring up this planet. Beloved ones, I will be awaiting your return.
Final Script
Please hurry. Already, the hand of the Darkness stirs toward this planet. Beloved ones, I await your return.
Translation Notes
The original line is more accurate - The Profound Darkness has already reached Rykros, which is why there are evil creatures roaming around the Rykros overworld and the towers.
Courage Tower
At the top of the tower (of course), a bizarre creature of blue flame and armor easily dispatches with a group of Carmine Heads.
May Script
There's nothing to fear from the hand behind the 'Darkness!' Oh? So you are the people who received commands from Le Roof. Go ahead, try and defeat me, and prove that you've got the qualification to be 'Protectors!'
Final Script
There's nothing to fear from the hand of the Darkness! Oh? So you are the people sent here by Le Roof. Go ahead, try and defeat me. Prove that you've got the qualifications to be Protectors!
Translation Notes
The first sentence is a bit confusingly phrased - it's supposed to be saying that the monsters that the Darkness is sending out are no problem. "The hand behind the Darkness is insignificant!" (闇の手の者とて、物の数ではないな!) might be better.
May Script
You've done well! Go, take this object which is the proof you've earned.
Final Script
You've done well! Go, take these objects which are the proof you've met and passed me.
Translation Notes
Sa-Lews gives multiple items, so "object" had to be pluralized.
Strength Tower
At the top of the tower (naturally), a strange creature of orange flame and armor easily dispatches with a pack of La-Faw-Gans...well, demonic wizards. De-Vars' strategy of "punch everybody" isn't enough to defeat the would-be Protectors.
May Script
You're better than I thought. That's comforting. Go ahead and take this object that verifies the proof you've earned.
Final Script
You're better than I thought. That's comforting. Go ahead and take these objects. They are the proof you need.
Translation Notes
Proper pluralization pleases publisher.
Silence Temple
Having met both tower guardians, the group reports back to Le Roof.
May Script
Ah, 'Protectors,' you have carried out your mission well. You have proven yourselves, and I can enlighten you to the secret of Algo's genesis. Many billions of years ago... a spiritual life form split up and started a war...
Final Script
Ah, Protectors, you have carried out your mission well. You have proven yourselves, and I can enlighten you with the secret of Algo's genesis. Many billions of years ago... a spiritual life form split into two lesser beings, who eventually began to fight...
Translation Notes
The timespan in the English text is wrong - it should be "several hundred million years ago" (数億年の昔), not "billions."
The later English draft takes more than a few liberties with the original creation myth: Neither the May nor Japanese scripts mention that the two life forms from the split were "lesser beings".
May Script
After a long and arduous battle, there was finally a victor. The victorious side sealed the enemy spiritual life form in another dimension.
Final Script
After a long and terrible battle, there was finally a victor. The winner banished the enemy spiritual life form to another dimension.
Translation Notes
The place where the life form was sealed is slightly different in the Japanese script: "次元の狭間", or, "the space between dimensions."
The final English script changes "sealed" to "banished", probably to keep the mention of a seal later on from being redundant.
May Script
The victorious side was called 'The Great Light' and the defeated ones 'The Profound Darkness.'
Final Script
We called the victorious side The Great Light and the defeated one The Profound Darkness.
I see, 'Light' and 'Darkness'...
May Script
'The Great Light' feared danger from the resurrection of 'The Profound Darkness' and placed a seal on it...
Final Script
The Great Light feared the resurrection of The Profound Darkness and placed a seal over the dimensional portal...
Translation Notes
The dimensional portal is an invention of the final English script.
That's right...a gigantic seal of three planets on one fixed star...
May Script
Yes, it is, it's the planets of the Algo Solar System. And 'The Great Light' distributed 'Protectors' of the seal between three tribes, the Parmanians, Motavians and Desolisians. But there were fluctuations in the effect of the seal. Once every thousand years, the power would decrease drastically. As a warning of this phenomenon, Rykros, the planet that returns to Algo once every thousand years and myself, Le Roof were created.
August Script
Yes, it is. The Algo solar system. The Great Light also distributed Protectors of the seal between three tribes -- the Parmanians, Motavians, and Desolisians. But there were fluctuations in the strength of the seal. Once every thousand years, its power would weaken drastically. As a warning of this phenomenon The Great Light created Rykros, which returns to Algo once every thousand years, and myself, Le Roof.
Final Script
Yes, it is. The Algo solar system. The Great Light also distributed Protectors of the seal between three tribes -- the Parmanians, Motavians, and Dezolisians. But there were fluctuations in the strength of the seal. Once every thousand years, its power would weaken drastically. As a warning of this phenomenon The Great Light created Rykros, which returns to Algo once every thousand years, and myself, Le Roof.
Translation Notes
The original text and the May prototype specifically mention the planets as being the seal, not the entire solar system. The sun isn't part of the seal. Kind of a nitpick, but...
The alternate romanization of "Desolisians" made it to the August script before being corrected.
May Script
But what kind of use is an invisible planet as a warning?
Final Script
But what use is an invisible planet as a warning?
May Script
'The Great Light' understood what would happen... That through the generations, 'Protectors' would forget this mission. That is precisely why Rykros would break its silence when the time came for the seal's final moment... to remind the 'Protectors' of their mission they were born to do.
Final Script
The Great Light knew that, through the generations, the Protectors would forget their mission. So Rykros was designed to break its silence when the seal's final moment came... to remind the Protectors of the mission they were born to do.
The seal's final moment? What do you mean by final moment?
May Script
Throughout the passage of time, 'The Profound Darkness' has been seething with animosity and revenge. And, once every thousand years when there is a weakening in the strength of the seal, the intensified revengeful spirit would finally break away from 'The Profound Darkness' and would come to Algo in a physical form. That form is Dark Force...
Final Script
Throughout time The Profound Darkness has seethed with animosity and the need for revenge. And once every thousand years, when the strength of the seal weakens, the most intense part of The Profound Darkness' hate-filled spirit is able to break through the portal and come to Algo in physical form.
Translation Notes
There's another reference to a dimensional portal added to the final English draft.
May Script
Final Script
So that's what Dark Force was!
Translation Notes
Rune is able to figure out what Dark Force is by himself in the later English versions.
May Script
Every time, a courageous person would bring about, a brief period of peace in Algo by expelling Dark Force... But, finally... Dark Force destroyed the planet of Parma in a previous battle.
Final Script
Every time, a courageous person would defeat Dark Force and bring about a brief period of peace by expelling it. But, The Profound Darkness is patient, and finally it destroyed the planet of Parma in battle.
May Script
That means one of the seals is gone!
Final Script
That means part of the seal is gone!
Translation Notes
The May script is more accurate to the Japanese line, but they both basically have the same meaning, so whatever.
May Script
That's right. Presently, a thousand years later, The Profound Darkness' is trying to completely obliterate all the seals.
Final Script
That's right. And now, a thousand years later, The Profound Darkness is trying to break completely free at last.
May Script
The seal's final moment. Are you saying that it's happening now?
Final Script
The seal's final moment... Are you saying that it's happening now?

May Script
Either way, that's what's going to happen.

Translation Notes
Much more succinct in the final draft.

Translation Notes
Chaz's line in the Japanese version was another exclamation-only line (!!), so the May draft is both more accurate and fits more with how Chaz reacts later in the scene.
May Script
'Protectors,' listen carefully... If 'The Darkness' is resurrected, the destruction of the seal, that is, the Algo solar system, is a foregone conclusion. To prevent this occurrence, the only thing that can be done is to enter the mind of 'The Darkness' and destroy it. As long as you have those Rings of the Stars, you should be able to withstand the power of 'The Darkness.' The time has come. Obey the will of 'The Great Light'and attack 'The Profound Darkness.' This is the very mission that you, as 'Protectors' have been born with.
August Script
Protectors, listen carefully... If The Darkness is escapes, the seal, that is, the Algo solar system, will certainly be destroyed. The only way to prevent this is to go to The Darkness, enter its dimension, and destroy it. As long as you have those Rings of the Stars, you should be able to withstand the largest part of the power of The Darkness. So the time has come. Obey the will of The Great Light and attack The Profound Darkness. This is the very mission that you, as Protectors have been born to.
Final Script
Protectors, listen carefully... If The Darkness escapes, the seal, that is, the Algo solar system, will certainly be destroyed.

Translation Notes
Le Roof uses the Kanji 懐, which is translated as "mind" in the May draft, but could also translate to "heart" or "bosom". Not a literal heart / bosom, figurative ones. This was changed to a more specific "dimension" later on.

Final Script

I've been listening patiently and you keep talking about this mission!
I'm not going to fight for no mission! And anyway, where is this Great Light now? What's it doing?
Translation Notes
Odd that the editors suddenly dropped the ball on Chaz's dialogue here.
May Script
'The Great Light' is no longer present in this land. It has gone off to a far off land...
Final Script
The Great Light is no longer present in this galaxy. It has gone far away...
Translation Notes
The May prototype and the Japanese game (「大いなる光」は もはや、この地には いません…。さらなる地へと去りました…。) are more vague as to where The Great Light went off to.
You're telling me, he hands down missions and he goes off somewhere? Give me a break! Missions, 'Protectors,' who the heck cares? It has nothing to do with us! No way am I going to fight for someone like that!
I'm going to live by my own will!

There is no one single truth... Chaz!

Translation Notes
Obviously Chaz has already set foot on Rykros by this point.

Chaz... What are we to do?

To tell you the truth... I don't know what's going on.

May Script
When Alys died, you explained things to me... and Rika tried to lift my spirits... But, in truth, I really didn't understand! At first, I just considered myself as an offering to Alys's soul for its peaceful repose. And then, gradually I found out that there are people who are glad that I am fighting.
Final Script
When Alys died, you explained things to me... and Rika tried to lift my spirits... But in truth, I really didn't understand! I could only see that the person who'd taught me everything had died. I would have sacrificed anything, even my life, for the peaceful repose of Alys's soul. But gradually, I found out that there are people who depend on me to fight.
Translation Notes
There's a big mistake with the translation of the third line. "最初は、ライラの供養のつもりだった…" roughly translates to "At first, I was just planning on a memorial service for Alys..." Whoever translated it didn't seem to get the compound term here, translated 供 as "offer" and 養 as "support", then made up a new line from that.
The final English script added an entirely new line and rewrote the previous line again.
That's all fine, isn't it? Chaz...

Missing a bit of punctuation here...during a very important scene. Welp.

Translation Notes
As usual, the May script is closer to the Japanese script but more clumsily phrased.
