  • In the 2nd PC CD of Mega Man X8, there's a folder of Japanese voice actors' sound data, including the main character's voice as Navigators. Document it. There are wallpapers too.
  • Document more differences between the PC and PS2 releases.

Mega Man X8 is the last game in the Mega Man X series. Sadly, it was released in limited numbers due to X7's poor sales. Fortunately, this was mitigated with the release of the X Legacy Collection.

In the game's dialogue files there are descriptions for intermissions which didn't make it into the game. These are found in the file "mes/USA/HB_IM.mcb".

Pitch Black [Pallette]

Emergency transmission! News of a priceless Metal stolen from Metal Valley.
This Metal is concealed in the underground logistics base Pitch Black.
But since you cleared that mission, security is even tighter.
The only option we have is to send Axl in disguised as a security droid.
We need that metal to make new Chips! Go get it and bring it back!

Dynasty [Layer]

Emergency transmission! Something's happened at the floating city Dynasty.
Someone has snuck in and set explosives thoughout the whole area...
Dynasty will be destroyed unless we get over there and stop this scheme.

Metal Valley [Pallette]

Hey, everyone! I have an emergency mission for you!
The rebellion at the Metal Valley mine are still in progress!
The Reploids there can't continue their work like this!
Space development depends on the ore mined there! We have to help them!

Unused Audio Clips

Japanese English Description
When using the Ultimate Armor, X can perform a Shoryuken with Up + Triangle, but his audio bank contains a "Hadou-Ken" voice clip which is not used anywhere in the game.
Since Alia is an analog character to X, she has all of his corresponding voice clips, including the Shoryuken and Hadou-Ken clips. However, Alia does not have access to the Ultimate Armor to perform either of these.

Unused Animations

Despite not being able to use them in-game, both Alia and Pallette have the animations for their corresponding characters' unique abilities in their model files. Alia has an animation for the Giga Attack, Shoryuken and Nova Strike, while Pallette has the animation for the A-Trans, in the same animation IDs of X and Axl, respectively.

Unused Models

In the playable character model folder of the PC version of Mega Man X8, there is a file called "PL_BOKO" containing an unused version of the Guardroid enemy, which resembles a ninja. It does not seem to have an unique ability aside from the normal dash, and any projectiles it might have been able to shoot are not in the game's files.

Once again, a different European title screen, the same that was used in Mega Man Zero 2 to 4 and Mega Man Battle Network 4 and 5 (GBA version only). In the PC version, the logo changes based on the selected language.

Opening Song

Japan International

The opening song in the Japanese PS2 version is "Wild Fang" by Janne Da Arc, while the International PS2 versions use the instrumental song from the title screen together with a voiced narration instead. The opening movie is also completely different in the International PS2 release.

The PC version sticks to the Japanese opening in all regions, the only difference being the omission of the game title in order to fit with both Rockman/Megaman variants of the game.

The AA and AAA ranks are 特A (Special A) and S in Japan.

Version Differences

There are a few differences between the PS2 and PC releases of Mega Man X8, the latter of which served as the basis for the X Legacy Collection 2 release and was released everywhere but North America (unless you downloaded it from GameStops).

  • There are two PC releases, the second one (presumably European) being released on two discs with each disc containing different languages.
  • The PC release adds an option for English or Japanese audio.
  • Sound quality is overall improved compared to the PS2 release.

X Legacy Collection 2

  • Due to being a port, rather than emulated, load times are far shorter.
  • Because of presumed licensing issues, playing the Japanese version in non-Japanese releases will use the international introduction.
  • A glitch triggered by pressing the down button while holding the up button with Rasetsusen had been fixed.
  • A glitch involving negative overflow of metals through Life Sub Tank refill function in the Research and Development Lab had been fixed.
