Duke Nukem Forever/To-Do

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Duke Nukem Forever.

A to-do list for Duke Nukem Forever. This list is not comprehensive and may lack information that needs to be researched for/added to the article.

General

  • It probably would be easier if someone were to document everything that is used by the game, might make it easier to find unused stuff.
  • More unused text from various past builds (Shades OS, EDF vs. Pigcops multiplayer...).
  • Unused sounds for Shades OS (found in a_inventory/SOS).
  • There's an influx of unused models in the game. See this.
    • There are gib models for characters who almost never gib like Johnny O'Lenoman and General Graves.
  • Test rooms, such as the one shown in that Duke4 thread and this YouTube video.
  • Patches caused some cheats to not work properly. Verify this.
  • Command console that is normally disabled some info here and a tool to reenable it here.
  • Investigate the non-English versions with more than what is currently here.
    • The files of the Japanese release really need some looking into, there could be more to this version ala Syndicate Wars.
    • Look into the Russian release of the game, the dub apparently had some censorship.
    • If there really isn't enough content for the regional differences sub-page, move it back onto the main page and probably spin-off info about the Japanese version into a sub-page.
  • Unused weapons
    • Nuke ammo for RPG.
    • Another unused weapon called MiniGun_BL, appears to not be related to the Tittyana/Super Minigun added in DLC and seems to have an audio file called MiniGun_Fire_04.mp3. This article on the Duke Nukem wiki makes mention of it.
  • A bunch of graphics for the Babes seen in My Digs (found in the DigsMenu directory) appear to depict slightly earlier designs.
  • Partly obscured animations, such as the Men's restroom with the "hole" in Titty City and the EDF soldier getting attacked by a Pigcop in The Forkstop.
  • Sounds for driving a bus, which are likely used in the DLC.
  • The post-credits scene Press Conference (Map23.dnf) is not a video and is in fact rendered real time. There might be stuff hidden off camera.
  • Cover the console versions.

DLC Specific

  • There seems to be a fair bit of unused audio in The Doctor Who Cloned Me.
    • Proton appears to have audio of flying, something he never does in his boss fight.

To Investigate

  • The game's .DLLs need investigating, specifically:
    • 3DRDebugLib.dll - The name kinda gives it away, likely contains a lot of debug content.
    • Meqon.dll - The physics engine added to the game in 2004. People say that it was removed in 2006 but this unsourced as far as I'm aware. Verify how much this is used.
    • Editor.dll - Contains the editor, which is mostly functional but missing files to make it run. Tools such this can help restore functionality.
  • There're probably a few instances of things that seem to be unused but aren't in the game, make note of them in a Notes page.
  • The Doctor Who Cloned Me is referred to as "DLC03" in the files, why is this so?
  • The Redist folder could use investigating:
    • There are various copies of DiectX from April 2005 to June 2010, possible development leftovers? (if not worth a mention as an oddity?)
  • Some music in the game may be cut off such as Duke's whistling before he takes a leak in the opening moments (MUS_WhistleTheme.mp3) and Johnny O'Lenoman's music. Verify if these are only partly used or not.
  • Check for inaccessible areas in levels, especially at sections just before/after map transitions.
  • Also check for any easter eggs in textures, like a signature.
  • A bunch of Hud graphics for weapons are suffixed "hl2" (with one that's just "hl") obliviously referencing Half-Life 2, are these used?
  • Considering this game runs on a hyper-modified version of a game engine from 1998, there are probably a crapton of bugs.
    • As an example, Rerez experienced a bug with a scripted event in the Crash Course level where a slab of concrete failed to drop down. Found a way to replicate this.
    • There's lots of old glitch videos on Youtube that should be used a starting point.
  • Assets for a EDF base and Area 51, later used in DLC. Verify how much of what's leftover of these areas in base game is used in DLC.
  • There's a strange video found in Textures/bik called cust_shower.bik that depicts two women showering, is this used?
  • loading.int makes mention of a few demo recordings.
Demo00=Duke Lives
Demo01=Damn! It's Late...
Demo04B=The Lady Killer
Demo05=Vegas in Ruin
  • Keeping this in mind, does the game support demo recording/playback?
  • What's the Entry.dnf map?
  • The .jpn files found in the Doctor who Cloned Me DLC appear to feature early/alternative names of levels, see if these files exist in the base game have this early names/content as well. (Might be able to find these more easily on console versions)
