Eighth High Score Entry
All versions of the game display seven names in the high score table, but there were plans to show eight instead.
At $11C82 in the US ROM is the string "COLIN ". This comes immediately after the seven default high score names. The programming for preparing the default high score table will never read this name. The name does not appear to be read by any other part of the game, either. Had his name shown up, poor Colin would have zero points. The name is likely a reference to Colin Boswell, a programmer who worked on a number of games with Domark, but not this one.
At $109BC in the US ROM is a template string for the eighth entry in the high score table, which doesn't show up, but is accessed and updated with correct information.
ROM:000109BC dc.b 5 ROM:000109BD dc.b 2 ROM:000109BE dc.b $1E ROM:000109BF dc.b '8.------ --------',$E,0
The first three bytes are commands for the string printing routine; the purpose of the $E byte is unknown.
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: It is unknown whether the game accidentally lets you enter your name for the eighth slot. |
