After criticism of Resident Evil 6, the Capcom team wanted to go back to the series' roots of survival horror. The result, Resident Evil 7, is generally seen as a success on that front.

In Japan, the game was heavily censored to comply with CERO, the country's video game rating board. Capcom released two versions of the game; the normal D-rated version, along with the less-but-still-censored "Grotesque Version" which is rated Z.
