Hmmm...
To do:
  • More revisional differences.
  • Bugs!

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is the often forgotten multiplayer mode of Half-Life 2, released as a separate game. What makes this different from Half-Life deathmatch is the fact that you can punt a toilet towards enemy players with the Gravity Gun. It was once given for free to owners of Nvidia graphics cards.

Unused Areas

dm_runoff has an unused sewer area that is cut off from the rest of the map. This sewer may have been used as a shortcut between the map's ends, due to this area's placement.

Revisional Diiferences

Official HL2DM Mapping Contest

Back in 2005, Valve held an official mapping contest for Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, in order to bolster the game's number of maps. By 18 March 2005, this contest was over with the map dm_underpass being the winner, with dm_resistance and dm_powerhouse being second and third place respectively. These maps were later added to the game. Another map called dm_avalon was listed as a honourable mention, however, this map was never added to HL2:DM proper.[1]

SteamPipe

When Valve migrated to using the SteamPipe content delivery system for their games, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch was no exception. However, with this update, a new map for the game was added called halls3 (known internally as GreatHalls). This map was originally created by Chris "MacMan" Ashton of Turtle Rock Studios, as a sort-of sequel to a Half-Life deathmatch map he made prior called Halls2.

20th Anniversary Update

With Half-Life 2's 20th anniversary, Valve also decided to update Half-Life 2: Deathmatch to fix its own long-standing bugs. The changes are:

  • Fixed player model selection in the options menu.
  • Fixed slam not being able to be detonated if you were too close to a wall
  • Fixed view bob with the SMG equipped.
  • Fixed using the Gravity Gun to yo-yo grenades, sometimes causing the server to disconnect or crash.
  • Fixed missing sound effects for the Gravity Gun.
  • Fixed characters playing a missing animation when switching weapons while jumping and moving.
  • Fix weapons being invisible when being given another weapon of the same class.

There were also updates to certain maps:

  • Increased player spawn point count in many maps.
  • Fixed prop placement in maps that would allow players to escape the world.
  • Fixed floating props in dm_runoff.
  • Fixed the area portal on the blast door in dm_runoff causing the world to no longer render when the door was shut.
  • Added geometry to many maps where the player could see outside of bounds.
  • Fixed several areas where the player could see out of the world.
  • Moved the blue barrels in dm_resistance that you could pick up with the Gravity Gun through the chainlink doors.
