Hudson's Adventure Island was essentially a port of the arcade game Wonder Boy... except Wonder Boy was replaced with Hudson Soft's real life spokesperson Takahashi Meijin... who was renamed Master Higgins for the English release.

Hidden Text

Each version of the game contains the string

HECTOR

to check if the game was soft or hard reset.

This is likely a leftover of an earlier version of another game, Hector'87, which was also released by Hudson.

The Japanese version uses a different font for the font above the main title. The "TOP 00" message was also changed for the international releases, being above the Press Start Button message rather than below. The tile was also moved up, much closer to the score counter. The Press Start Button message was changed to Push Start and a "TM AND" was added before the Copyright text which in of itself was rearranged to give space to the Licensed by Nintendo message not present in the Japanese version.

The European release shortens the "Licensed by Nintendo of America Inc." text.

Ending

The line "YATTANE TAKAHASHI!" ("You did it, Takahashi!") was removed from the ending screen in the international versions.
