Super Adventure Island marks Master Higgins' first foray into the world of 16-bit gaming. Amazing soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro aside, the game is pretty unremarkable.

Unused Font

This font just screams "serious business."

A very plain font, likely used for debugging purposes, can be found hiding in VRAM.

Bonus Stage Tour

Honestly, it's not worth it.

Rapidly pressing the X button at a specific rate during the intro cinema (where Tina is turned to stone) will slowly fill the bottom of the screen with Master Higgins heads, as well as increment an internal counter. Once this counter reaches a certain value, you will be sent on a tour of the game's five bonus stages, then dumped back to the title screen.

A much easier way to see this is to use the Pro Action Replay (PAR) code 808A2400 (US) or 808A1A00 (JP), and then quickly press X a few times during the intro.

Wait for the title screen to appear two times, and on the second appearance, hold L, Right, and X and press Start.

Regional Differences

Title Screen

  • In Japan, the game is called Takahashi Meijin no Daibouken-jima, and (obviously) features a different design for the logo, with the background fading to a blue color, which was removed for the international versions. More copyright information was also added and moved to the bottom of the screen.

  • The Japanese version provides infinite continues while there are only 2 in the international versions.
