Font
The English font of the Japanese version differs from that of the US version, using the Atari font, Such as Rush'n Attack (NES) and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
3-Players Mode
The Japanese version allows up to three players simultaneously by connecting an additional controller into the Famicom's peripheral port. The additional controller is used to control Gwinbee, a mint green ship that was introduced in this installment. Since the NES uses its second controller port for peripherals, and the Four Score and Satellite wouldn't be released until 1990, the US version only allows up to two players. The girly-looking Winbee was dropped from the roster in the US version and Gwinbee became the Player 2 ship in its place.

The US version does not support 3-player mode, and the scoreboard screen has been adjusted.
The FDS version requires the disk to be replaced with a B-side before the game starts, making the cutscene music just fade out instead of the scoreboard music as in the US version.
Difficulty
Both the original Famicom Disk System and NES versions had no difficulty options. The Famicom re-release, however, added two (Normal and Easy).
Introduction
Sign
In the Japanese version, the sign seen during Dr. Cinnamon's abduction features the name of the island. For the US version, it was changed to "Konami".
