A Japan-only add-on for the Famicom which stored games on proprietary floppy disks. It allowed for saving game progress, as well as enhanced graphical and audio features - none of which were possible on Famicom cartridges when the Disk System debuted in early 1986.

Many FDS games were converted to cartridge format for overseas release, and some of them (like The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and more) went on to become NES classics.

Before long, the Disk System became redundant as technical advances allowed Famicom cartridges to contain more memory and advanced features than an FDS game could. This, along with the frequent failures of the disks due to their sensitivity, led to the FDS being phased out by 1993 (though Nintendo continued to offer rewriting services for faulty disks until 2003).
