Now you're playing with power - online!

This app, available only to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, combines the Kachikachi emulator from the Famicom Mini and NES Classic Edition with a steady supply of varying-quality Famicom and NES games to play on your Switch, plus some Nintendo-provided "SP" savestates if age has worn you down enough that you can't get to the final bits of certain games.

Debugging Content

The Lua scripts mention many debugging functions including a Debug Menu, debug info printing, debug info tracing, debug saving, and debug store.

Additional Emulators

Additional emulators are referenced in the data files: Canoe, Hiyoko, and Count.

A leak of NERD's internal emulator work on April 19, 2022 revealed that Hiyoko was the codename for a Game Boy emulator, which was later released as Game Boy - Nintendo Switch Online. What "Count" refers to remains unknown.

Regional Differences

In Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the app released as Family Computer - Nintendo Switch Online since those regions received the Famicom rather than its redesigned overseas counterpart (although Hong Kong is the only region to have official releases of both the NES and Famicom in 1986 and 1991 respectively).

Controllers

The controllers in the menu icon and splash screen change to match the region.

Cover Art

Aside from the Famicom and NES apps using their respective cover artwork, the cover art for The Tower of Babel on the Famicom app was changed to Mystery Tower on the NES app. Additionally, the Japanese "Family Computer" (ファミリーコンピュータ) text was replaced with English "Nintendo Entertainment System" text. The fact any of this was done at all is odd given that the game wasn't released for the NES during the console's original lifespan and the game description noting that it's a Famicom game.

Other

The cover art for various games were updated as new games were added to the service.

The initial release of Fire 'n Ice lacked cover art in the international NES app. In a later update, the game would receive new cover art which removes the big warning sticker present on the original NES cover.

The initial release of Babel in the Japanese Famicom app used the original cover art. In a later update, the cover was updated changing the name to The Tower of Babel.
