This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers has Dillon go on a new adventure with a fresh new look, focusing more on a post-apocalyptic futuristic setting instead of the wild west setting of the previous two games.

This time you hang out in a city, doing jobs, or doing races, if there is no rescue mission to do. The game introduces your Mii as an Amiimal which you play as for most of the game outside of the missions; other Miis that you have created on your 3DS can be hired as gunners. Unlike the previous two games, there's no mandatory touch screen controls.

This is the first Dillon game to receive a physical release (albeit only in Europe and Japan, the United States release remained an eShop exclusive) and the last Dillon game to be developed by Vanpool, as the company would eventually shut down around May 2023.

Hmmm...
To do:
Leftovers from Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger.
  • Check for any leftover sound effects in the game's sound archive br.bcsar
  • Nin10Doug has 3 live-streams of him datamining the game, there is some unused content is featured there that needs to be documented here.[1][2][3]
  • Document the demo version.

Unused Items

Found in recoveryItems.vpl are the recovery items that Dillon uses in-game, however also inside it are two unused syringe like recovery items that don't get used.

An animation meant for them can be found inside Dillon's animation files as "jiroFlItem01"

Scrapped Features

Hair Salon

Found in cityHairSalon.vpl is a placeholder area for a Hair Salon that never made it in the final release.

Additionally a character model planned for the Hair Salon can be found in nHairdresserMdl.vpl

During development, it would have been possible to modify your Amiimal character using the hair salon, but it was later scrapped.

Unused Graphics

Found inside the graphics for the chips is a black chip with a yellow sticker on it.

DDHB-BlackChip.png

Also found inside it, is a graphic of a boost chip being broken, boost chips do not break as it is the default chip Dillon uses in the game.

Unused Music

STRM_TEST_4CH.bcstm

Found in stream is an audio file called STRM_TEST_4CH.bcstm, some placeholder music leftover from development.

STRM_EMPLOYMENT.bcstm

An unused music track, the filename suggests this song was supposed to be used in the jobs.

STRM_HOTEL_RADIO.bcstm

An unused music track that is supposed to be used somewhere in the hotel, it is a more energetic track.

In br.bcsar, it is named "STRM_HOTEL_RADIO_OLD" suggesting this was a earlier version of the hotel theme for recruiting gunners, which was later replaced with a calmer track instead.

STRM_HOTEL_CARD

In the United States and Europe releases of the game, the poker card game was removed, as such the music for it in those releases do not play here.

Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger Leftovers

While most of these tracks were overwritten with new ones or have gotten deleted, certain tracks from the previous game can be found leftover inside stream unmodified.

strm_duel.dspadpcm.bcstm

These tracks labeled with a standup were overwritten with different themes (The original audio is still in the sound archive) which ended up being used for when the main Amiimal character tries to break the barrel on top of their head before their species is chosen, and drink something to upgrade their stats, except this one was leftover from the previous game which was used for Gallo's duels.

strm_ending.dspadpcm.bcstm

The ending cutscene theme from the previous game.

strm_move2.dspadpcm.bcstm

The overworld theme from the previous game.

strm_nightfield.dspadpcm.bcstm

strm_battle2.dspadpcm.bcstm

The Arma-mode music from the previous game.

strm_battle3.dspadpcm.bcstm

The gear training music from the previous game.

strm_harmonica.dspadpcm.bcstm

strm_versatile01.dspadpcm.bcstm

Unused Sounds

STRM_SAVE

When the game is autosaving, this sound never plays.

Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger Leftovers

A vast majority of the sounds from the previous game can be found in the game's sound archive.

Two leftover sounds from the previous game can be found in br.bcsar, being labeled as _OLD.

SE_12_ENCOUNTER_OLD

Obscured Graphics

Graphics

Cut-In Transition

The graphic for the cut-in for when it introduces each character has stuff that is not seen in-game, due to being cutoff.

Graphic In-Game
DHB-Cut-In.png DHB-Cut-In-InGame.png

Ultra Chip

Because of the Ultra Chip being very small, it's hard to see the lettering on the chip.

If the model is opened up using a model viewer, it's revealed to be saying "Geki Chip"

Textures

Russ' "Brank" Eyes

Found in Russ' eye texture, there is a unused eye texture that cannot be seen in-game normally, it's his closed eyes texture with the word "Brank" on it.

Sal's Bag

Sal's bag texture has parts for his previous model from Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger

DHB-SalsBagTexture.png

Leftover Holster Texture

Found in Dillon's early tire model's texture in arma_tire.vpl, you can see the Holster texture that was leftover from his previous model from Rolling Western, in which the model was recycled and had its texture modified.

Oddities

Early Designs

Dillon

Dillon's earlier model (dillonHDMdl.vpl) can be seen in the Monsters Routed Screen as a pre-rendered image when you finish a village mission, showing to have no spike upgrades on him, when by default he has them.

DillonHeatBreaker-EarlyDillon-InTheMonstersRoutedScreen.png

Movie Cutscene Images

The cutscene images inside the cutscene viewer which can be unlocked after the player collects 5 stars through replaying the missions, have differences to them compared to the ones shown in-game.

The Red Flash

The image for "The Red Flash" cutscene shows Dillon looking at the player, however in-game he looks away instead.

Cutscene Image In-Game
DHB-RedFlashCutsceneImage.png DHB-RedFlashCutsceneIn-Game.png

Threat Overthrown

The image for the "Threat Overthrown" cutscene shows Dillon with his default gear including his default rolling engines, however in-game it would load up the gear that the player used during that mission in the story mode, also the player cannot downgrade the gear back to the default upgrades and replay the cutscene again through the cutscene menu without them, the player would have to replay the mission without the gear (if the current upgrades were to break) for the cutscene to show up this way, the rolling engines however, cannot be downgraded back to the default ones.

Cutscene Oddities

T-Posing Russ

If you replay a mission while borrowing money from Stranger, after replaying the mission, a cutscene where the player repays their debt in the garage will show, at the start it shows Russ in a T-Pose.

DillonHeatBreaker-TPosingRussInCutscene.png

Inconsistent Lie-Down Position

If Dillon loses all of his hearts during the battle segments, his death animation will play where he will fall on his knees and fall down front-side (Or during the pursuit segments he will be blasted, fall on his back and then bounce up and fall front-side), however with the Auto Med kit Dillon can be revived, showing a cutscene of him being revived, however now laying on his back-side instead, also Dillon is no longer wearing his cowboy hat. (In pursuit segments of the game, Dillon's hat is normally off when his death animation plays)

Region Differences

The game logo is different across versions

Japan United States

Saving Animation Position

When the game saves, the saving animation is on the bottom right in the Japanese version, in other versions it is on the center of the screen instead.

Exclusive Features

Only in the Japanese release, is a card roulette minigame, where the main Amiimal can play cards with other Amiimal gunners.

The United States and Europe releases have removed this minigame due to depiction of gambling and as a result, no gunners will sit there at the table.

Models, graphics and sounds for the minigame remain in the files for these versions.
