Timeline
Pre-Group 1
- 24 Pokémon from Spaceworld 1997 didn't make the cut. There's no evidence in the source files for any of these Pokémon ever appearing in the 1999 revamp.
- 10 baby Pokémon: Mikon (Vulpix), Monja (Tangela), Gyopin (Goldeen), Para (Paras), Hinaazu (Doduo), Koonya (Meowth), Puchikoon (Ponyta), Betobebii (Grimer), Pudi (Growlithe), and Baririina (Mr. Mime).
- 4 evolutions of Generation I Pokémon: Jaranra (Tangela), Animon (Ditto), Nameeru (Lickitung), and Riifi (Eevee).
- Shibirefugu, an evolution of Qwilfish.
- Manboo 1, Ikari, and Gurotesu, a three-stage Water/Steel-type line.
- Rinrin and Berurun, a two-stage Dark-type line.
- Taaban, a solo version of Slowbro's tail / Slowking's crown.
- Bomushikaa, a single-stage Pokémon with a unique Water/Fire typing.
- Urufuman and Waaurufu, a two-stage Ice line.
- The original Water starter line from Spaceworld '97 has already been replaced by the Totodile line, and at least the first stage of the Fire starter line had been changed to the Cyndaquil line. The second and third stage Fire starter Pokémon keep their Spaceworld 1997 names, Borubeaa and Dainabea. It's not clear if Cyndaquil's evolutions hadn't been developed yet, or if they were and just hadn't been given new names at this point.
- At some point, Kyonpan was (likely) replaced by Sudowoodo.
- Kotora and Raitora were (even more likely) replaced by Teddiursa and Ursaring.
- 4 Pokémon from the Spaceworld 1997 demo were already renamed:
- Chikorita: Changed from Happa (Leaf) to Chikorino (Chicory + the dimunitive masculine suffix -ino).
- Meganium: Renamed from its 1997 incarnation, Hanaryuu (literally "Flower dragon"). Name already finalized.
- Noctowl: Changed from Booboo (variation of Hoothoot's Japanese name, Hoohoo) to Yorunozuku (taken from 夜, night, and 木菟, horned owl), its final Japanese name.
- Elekid: Already changed from Elebebii.
Group 1 - 1999/04/03
This is the earliest known full group of Pokémon.
- There are 11 みてい, or pending, names, going from Pending 01 to Pending 12. Pending 02 is missing and presumably predates this list, and could have been any Pokémon between Meganium and Yanma.
Group 2 - 1999/06/02
Even though almost two months have passed since Group 1, very few changes were made:
- Bayleef: The placeholder name Pending 01 has been blanked out.
- Furret: Name changed from Ninten (from Nintendo (possibly) and 貂, Japanese marten) to Dakuten.
Group 3 - 1999/06/14
No new or cut Pokémon, but many are renamed:
- Chikorita: Gains its final name.
- Bayleef: Takes Sunkern's original name.
- Quilava and Bakphoon: No longer using the names of the 1997 Fire starters.
- Ledian: Renamed from Mitsuboshi (from 三つ, three, and 星, star).
- Spinarak: Changed from Kokumo (from 小, small, and 蜘蛛, spider) to Itomaru (from 糸, thread, and 丸, circle).
- Crobat: Renamed from Ekushingu (X-ing).
- Mareep: Renamed from Pachimee (from ぱちぱち, a crackling sound, and メーメー, a bleating sound).
- Hoppip and Skiploom: Changed from Haneko (葉, leaf, and 猫, cat) and Poponeko (shortened from 蒲公英, dandelion, and 猫) to Hanebōzu and Popobōzu (with the bōzu part possibly taken from ネギ坊主).
- Sunkern: Now has the temp name Pending 01.
- Sunflora: Changed from Sanii (Sunny) to Kimawari (from 黄, yellow, and 向日葵, sunflower).
- Smeargle: Changed from Peintaa (Painter) to Doble (Dog + dabble).
- Smoochum: Changed from Rippu (...lip) to Kisukisu (the touch or pressing of one's lips against another person or an object).
Group 4 - 1999/07/18
More renaming:
- Sentret and Furret: Changed from Moruten (from 守る, to guard or watch over, and 貂, Japanese marten) and Dakuten to Otachi (from 尾, tail, and 鼬, weasel) and Ootachi (from 大, big, and 鼬).
- Quagsire: Changed from Mizuuo (from 水, water, and 鯢, primitive salamander; also possibly a play on 水魚, the longnose lancetfish) to Nuoh (from 沼, swamp, 王, king, and 鯢).
- Gligar: Renamed from Sasoriga (from 蠍, scorpion, and possibly 蛾, moth; could also be a corruption of 蠍座, Scorpius).
- Scizor: Changed from Shizaasu (corruption of シザーズ, scissors) to Hasaam (from 剪む, clip).
- Stantler: Changed from Mejika (from 目, eye, and 鹿, deer) to Odoshishi (from 威し, intimidating, and a different reading for 鹿, deer; also a reference to Shishi-odoshi).
- Blissey: Changed from Happii (Happy) to Happiness.
Group 5 - 1999/08/01
- The following Pokémon were cut between July 30 and August 1:
- Norowara, a single-stage Ghost/Dark Pokémon.
- Pending 05, an unnamed Girafarig evolution.
- Pending 06, an unnamed Shuckle evolution.
- They were replaced by Misdreavus, Pineco, and Dunsparce respectively. Misdreavus initially inherited Norowara's name.
- Magcargo and Celebi also make their first appearances in this group, with Celebi still using a placeholder name, Pending 12.
- The following names were changed:
- Teddiursa: Changed from Kokuma (from 小, small, and 熊, bear) to Himeguma (from 姫, cute / small, 朏, crescent moon, and 熊).
- Larvitar line: Changed from Igaruu, Pending 11, and Girasu to Yogiras, Sanagiras, and Bangiras. "Igaruu" seems to reflect the Pokémon that once stood in Larvitar's spot, as seen in the 990613 sprite archive. If it was indeed assigned to an early iteration of Cyndaquil, then this name might come from "iga" (毬, a chestnut's burr), and possibly the German word "igel" (hedgehog).
Group 6 - 1999/08/14
Three name changes in this group:
- Ariados: Changed from Tsuuheddo (Two head) to Ariadone (from Ariadne).
- Aipom: Changed from Teiru (Tail).
- Magcargo: Changed from Maguraggu (Magma + slug) to Magmag (basically the same, just formed differently).
Early sprites of Chinchou, Lanturn, Wobbuffet, Forretress, Slugma, and Corsola appear in the Spaceworld 1999 demo, but their specs do not.
Group 7 - 1999/08/22
After Spaceworld 1999, the developers made the final set of additions and removals to the Johto roster:
- The following Pokémon were cut:
- Pending 03, an unnamed Yanma evolution, found in slot 171.
- Tsubomitto, an alternate evolution for Weepinbell, found in slot 193.
- Madaamu, an evolution for Farfetch'd, found in slot 195.
- Tsuinzu, a pre-evolution of Girafarig, found in slot 202.
- Purakkusu, Pinsir's evolution, found in slot 213.
- Pending 10, an unnamed Piloswine evolution, found in slot 222.
- The following Pokémon made their first proper appearances in this group:
- Chinchou and Lanturn took slots 170 and 171.
- Wobbuffet took slot 202.
- Forretress took slot 205.
- Slugma took slot 218.
- Corsola took slot 222.
- Some existing Pokémon moved into the slots of cut Pokémon:
- Yanma: Moved from 170 to 193, taking Tsubomitto's old slot.
- Quagsire: Moved from 190 to 195, taking Madaamu's old slot.
- Aipom: Moved from 194 to 190.
- Shuckle: Moved from 205 to 213, taking Purakkusu's old slot.
- Magcargo: Moved up from 218 to 219 to make room for Slugma.
And, of course, there were name changes:
- Ariados: Name finalized.
- Azumarill: No longer uses placeholder name Pending 03, changed to Marilli.
- Sunkern: No longer uses the placeholder name Pending 01, changed to Himanuts (from 向日葵, sunflower, and nut).
- Magcargo: Got its final name, while Slugma took Magcargo's old name.
- Houndour: Changed from デビル (devil) to Delvil (corruption of "devil").
- Phanpy: Changed from Paon (Japanese onomatopoeia for an elephant's trumpeting) to Mamezou (from 豆, literally "bean" but in this case meaning "tiny" or "child", and 象, elephant).
- Tyrogue: Changed from Gongu (gong) to Balky (corruption of "bulky").
- Raikou: Changed from just Rai (lightning).
- Entei: Lengthened from En (flame).
- Suicune: Extended from just plain Sui (water).
- Celebi: No longer using a placeholder name.
Group 8 - 1999/09/03
10 Pokémon names, some of which had been around since Spaceworld 1997, were changed due to trademark concerns:
- Hoppip Line: Hanebōzu, Popobōzu, and Wataneko (from 綿, cotton, and 猫, cat), are changed to Hanecco, Popocco, and Watacco respectively. The new suffix comes from 根っ子, root.
- Misdreavus: Norowara is changed to Maabera (possibly a combination of 魔, demon, and the Italian word "bella").
- Wobbuffet: Kageboozu (from 影, shadow, and either 海坊主, a yōkai, or 坊主, bald head) is changed to Sonans (from そうなんす, or, roughly, "that's that way it is", referencing Japanese comedian Hayashiya Sanpei I). The name "Kageboozu" (now spelled カゲボウズ) was later reused in Generation III for the Pokémon Shuppet.
- Qwilfish: Pukuu (from ぷくぷく, puffed up) changed to Harysen (shortened from 針千本, porcupinefish).
- Delibird: Gifuto (from "guess what") gets its final name.
- Mantine: Changed from Haneei (from 羽, wing, and 鱏, ray).
- Skarmory: Yoroidori (from 鎧, armor, and 鳥, bird) changed to Airmdo (possibly a combination of "air" and "armored").
- Smoochum: Kisukisu's name is changed (again), finally settling on Muchul.
Group 9 - 1999/09/13
The final two name changes:
- Misdreavus: Changed from Maabera to Muuma (corruption of 夢魔, a term for demons that appear in dreams, e.g. incubi, succubi).
- Phanpy: Changed from Mamezou to Gomazou (from 駒, which commonly refers to a horse but in this specifically refers to a foal, and 象, elephant).
