Wizard101/Retired Spells
This is a sub-page of Wizard101.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
To do: Add the rest of the retired spells. |
Throughout the 18 years of development of Wizard101, the game has seen many spells added and altered, tweaked and rebalanced. Some spells, however, didn't hold up as well, and ended up being retired. Most are just Treasure Card versions of existing spells. However, some regular spells were retired as well.
Retired Spells
Cloak
A spell that could be used to enchant blades and wards so that the other side cannot see what you have used. This was removed after it was discovered to have caused glitches. Originally set as no PVP, but once the developers realized that there's no reason to use this spell outside of there (and even there, the usefulness was quite limited), it was just removed entirely.
Freeze (2 pip version)
A spell similar to Myth's Blinding Light and Fire's Choke spells. Ice does get a spell named Freeze normally, but it costs 0 pips and only affects a single enemy.
Lifebane
An early Death School ward spell that dispelled the next incoming Life spell. It's possible this spell predated the dispel spells that are currently in the game.
Lord of Atonement
At some point, alternate class versions of the Life Spell Forest Lord were added to the game. Balance had their own, too, but for unknown reasons, it was the only one cut from the game. Oddly enough, the Treasure Card version still remains in the final game.
Monk of Mourning
Although this spell is learnable in game now, it was featured in a previous test realm in July 2023 with an alternate spellement path that never existed in the live game. In the live game, it deals 470 damage and gives a 50% universal shield. In the test realm though, the shield wasn't given, instead increasing the damage that it would have dealt.
Necromantic Curse
A cut Death School spell. Upon the defeat of the targeted enemy, all other enemies in the fight received universal traps. This spell was possibly cut for balancing purposes.
Orthrus (190+790)
In Wizard101, many spells have alternate versions with different damage values. Not as replacements or rebalances, but as alternate versions that cannot be learned by the Player. For whatever reason, this version of Orthrus was cut from the game.
Solar Surge
To do: Fact check this. I can only speculate because I never got this spell myself |
A Sun School spell cut from the game. When applied to a spell, it would add a certain amount of damage depending on the spell's rank (the number of pips needed to cast), like on Frost Beetle, it would increase the base damage by 50. Was removed after the developers found the ability of increasing the base damage of spells to be unbalanced in PvP environments (which is what this spell was originally intended for). It also could only be trained by people with at least the Veteran rank. Curiously, it mentions a minimum of 25 damage, which can never happen as no used damaging spells in this game that can be enchanted cost 0 pips, presumably how much it would have given if used on such a spell. The only known 0 pip spells that deal damage are spells from wands, which cannot be enchanted as they are item cards. Although it's still possible to have it if learned before the update which removed it from the game, it cannot be used at all as it is disabled in all forms of combat which makes it never appear in anyone's deck as a result.
Spirited Minotaur (65+600)
An alternate damage value of the Spirited Minotaur spell. While the spell is in the game, this alternate version is not.
Trick
A Shadow School spell that was taken out of the game. It simply took a power pip from a targeted player. This spell was only given to enemies. The effect itself is still used with the Shadow Trickster form which does use the spell automatically on a targeted enemy, but the card itself cannot be seen.
Retired Treasure Cards
To do: Add the retired treasure card spells. There's a lot of retired cards. |
Retired Monstrology Spells Not everything was meant to be a minion. |
Retired Treasure Card Variants Treasure card versions of existing cards that didn't last. |
Dampen Magic
A Balance treasure card that makes it so players cannot have more than 3 pips/power pips while it is active. However, if someone has more than that before the spell is active, they will not be able to gain more after the spell is active until either it either gets changed to a different global, or until they use their pips to get below that amount.
Elucidate
This was a sun school enchant treasure card that would enchant any spell it was used on to lower the pip cost by 2. For example, Evil Snowman, a 3 pip spell, would become 1 pip instead. This will not lower a spell cost below 0 pips.
Simplify
Same as Elucidate, except this lowers the pip cost by 1 instead of 2.
Forbidden/illegal treasure cards
These are treasure cards that exist in the game due to exploits and were not intended to be used by players. Players found to be in possession of them will typically get their accounts banned.
Boreas Ifrit
Although this spell IS present and can be trained, it is normally a myth spell. This version, however, is a sun spell (and cannot be cast by a player character due to being above the pip limit and it's not possible to use power pips with sun spells)
Dragonblade
Although Dragonblade is a spell that exists, the player version is not 50%. This is normally used by the Font of Strength enemy in the Loremaster dungeon as a cheat.
Infected Villager
Based on one of the mob enemies that can be found in Mooshu.
Lamia
Lamia is based on a boss from Atlantea with the same name.
Minotaur
Despite the name, this has nothing to do with the Minotaur spell. In reality, it's actually the spell that The Rat uses in Polaris if the fight lasts too long, dealing 1 million damage to all players while also having an additional 100 pierce, specifically designed to prevent players from surviving the attack.
Youkai
Youkai is based on a secret boss in the Tree of Life instance in Mooshu. It looks like a recolored Imp.
