Ultima Online is one of the longest-running MMORPGs to date, to the point of outliving the original RPG series that inspired it. It continues to survive throughout the decades, having gone through client changes, multiple changes in developers, and even an unexpected assassination of Lord British.

Hmmm...
To do:
Revisional differences, which will very likely need a subpage given the whole "this game's been around for 25 years" thing.

Unused Mobs

Sea Horse

Mob Number: 144
Although it has a proper 3D model, its 2D sprite is that of a horse (the equus ferus caballus) with a blue palette. Present since the Third Dawn expansion. The developers intended for the player to ride one, but numerous technical and gameplay balancing issues prevented it from being included.

Komodo Dragon

Mob Number: 134
Its appearance is similar to the Lava Lizards, but grey. Present since the Third Dawn expansion.

Paladin

Mob Number: 141
Using the 2D client, this mob uses a default male sprite. The 3D model has a proper set of armor.

"Multi Colored Hoarde Daemon"

Ultima Online-Mob 999.png

Mob Number: 999
Hidden at the end of the list of mobs is a multi-colored version of the Horde Daemon (itself not seen in its large form). Although its art has been present in the game since Lord Blackthorn's Revenge and it has a full set of animations, it has never been encountered in the game.

Unused Graphics

An old title screen for the game, which gets replaced by a newer title screen when booting the game.

Lemme tell ya a story about signs.
Once a sign existed, and it had stuff written on it.
See, signs aren't very exciting.

Unused Config Options

The following options are recognized as options by the game still, but for one reason or another aren't set by any current clients:

  • Cdkey
  • FrameCounter
  • InternalServer
  • RuntimeDebugMsg

Revisional Differences

  • The Third Dawn expansion introduced a 3D client.
  • The game originally used MIDI files for its soundtrack. However, since versions dating back at least to the Lord Blackthorn's Revenge expansion, these have been replaced with MP3 of varying bitrates (64 to 160 kbps).

Oddities

Uomax.cfg contains a single reference to "Multima" in its CD-ROM data path name. This was an early codename for the game.
