Unused Audio

A surprising amount of audio was left on the chopping block in Tekken 3's arcade release. Some leftovers from the previous game, some which would later be used in the PlayStation release, and others which are completely lost.

Unused Music

A very short 2 second loop, that sounds exactly like one of the drum loops from Nina Williams theme. Loops like this can be called "beat checker", it serves sound test function to test and check PCM loops.

A series of ascending notes repeated thrice, almost certainly being used to test the speakers and sound engine.

Unused Announcer Callouts

Scrapped Characters

  • "Soul Jackson!" - One of many provisional names for Tiger Jackson, an early character concept for what would eventually become Eddy Gordo. While Tiger himself is in the game, and can be selected as an alternate costume for Eddy, he curiously lacks any announcer callouts of his name in both the arcade & PlayStation releases of Tekken 3.
  • "Sake!" - A scrapped character who was intended to be a large salmon used as part of Kuma's moveset, as well as included as a standalone "mid-boss" that would flop on the ground when using attacks. Scrapped because Harada assumed arcade-goers would be aghast at paying ¥100 to use a joke character, although multiple leftovers remain, including this callout, their name, placeholder moveset data detailed below, and a "flopping" sound effect that goes unused unless accessing Sake's data through hacking.
  • "Insect!" - Another scrapped "mid-boss" character. Described by Harada as "a giant praying mantis" that was based off of a glitch with the character models that would cause their limbs and waists to become unnaturally long and thin. No other leftover data appears to exist for Insect.
  • "Jun Kazama!" - A character from Tekken 2 whose absence plays into the storyline motivations for protagonist Jin Kazama. Has a lot of additional data present, including her name, a completely new character portrait, her voice clips (all leftover from Tekken 2), and placeholder fighter data detailed below. A rather late omission, as Harada stated in a 2010 forum post that "Jun's data was included in Tekken 3 because there was still a possibility she may appear at that time."
  • "Kazuya Mishima!" - The protagonist of the first Tekken, & antagonist of Tekken 2. Has additional data for his name, as well as voice clips, which like Jun, are all leftover from Tekken 2. Harada described his data in Tekken 3 as "a prototype of Jin", presumably as Jin's moveset uses Kazuya's from the first 2 Tekken games as a base.

Miscellaneous Unused Calls

  • "Namco" - No audio accompanies the "Namco Presents" screen, where this presumably would have played.
  • "VS. R&D" - Standing for Video Software Research & Development. Would've likely accompanied the unused "Namco" announcement above.
  • "Enter the Tekken!" - Used in the PlayStation release, preceding the game's staff roll. It is not used anywhere in the arcade release.
  • "Tekken 3!" - Almost certainly was to be used on the title screen. Also another take of this was used in Tekken 3 commercials, like this.

Leftover Tekken 2 Audio

The Tekken 2 voice banks for various characters still exist, despite the characters involved either using new voice samples or not existing at all in Tekken 3. The characters in question include:

  • Jun Kazama - Used if the placeholder fighter data for Jun detailed below is loaded.
  • Kazuya Mishima
  • Nina & Anna Williams - Possibly planned to be used for Anna, as she was an alternate costume for Nina in the arcade version.
  • Roger - Notably, only part of Roger's audio bank was imported.
  • Alex - Like Roger, only a portion of his voice clips were retained.

Placeholder Fighter Data

Get a snapshot of the Tekken Force henchmen hidden in this version.

Placeholder data for multiple removed characters can be found in the game's data and can be accessed by using MAME cheat files.

Crow, Falcon, Hawk, and Owl are all Tekken Force members that use Jin's move set, and later show up as henchmen in the PlayStation version's Tekken Force mode, where they would also gain some of Bryan's attacks.

Jun uses Nina's character model and Jin's move set. Curiously, a corresponding character portrait and set of voice clips are also included, though the latter are leftover from Tekken 2.

Originally, Kuma was planned to have a giant salmon as a weapon, and Sake was going to serve as a joke "mid-boss" that was just the salmon, flopping around on the ground. Sake has a placeholder portrait, uses Paul's icon on the high score table, and in battle, uses Yoshimitsu's model with Jin's move set as a base. Whenever Sake uses any attacks, a faint "flopping" sound can be heard which isn't heard anywhere else in the game - a leftover of Sake's original character concept.

Kazuya is referenced in the data, but has far less internal references than those mentioned above. In addition to his name being present in text, an unused early moveset for Jin exists in the game's code, which can be accessed by hacking the characters' moveset and changing it to that of Mokujin's, a character who normally has no moveset of his own as he copies those of other fighters. While this unused moveset mostly includes bugged and incomplete versions of Jin's moves, it also curiously includes Kazuya's Hip Throw from the first 2 Tekken games. This throw isn't used by anybody in Tekken 3, and the data for it was seemingly removed in the PlayStation port.


When fought via codes, Jun & Sake use Eddy's stage and the secret character theme music.
