This is a sub-page of Super Mario Sunshine.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • More odd changes between scenarios
  • Smolderin' Stus splat into green goop in the King Boo boss fight, unlike on Pinna Beach

General

Obscured Map Text

On the top-left and bottom-right of the in-game map of Isle Delfino is some brief tourism marketing copy, tying in with the idea that Mario received this tourist map upon arrival.

While the first section of text of the map is perfectly legible, the second (guide_tx_2.bti) is partially obscured by a simple boat animation. The table above illustrates how the text is seen in-game with the obscured portions marked in bold.

No Fall Damage without FLUDD

In stages where Mario does not have FLUDD, (secrets, Pianta Village - Episode 3, Delfino Airstrip), Mario will not take fall damage.

Delfino Plaza

Bell Tower Nozzle Box

Inside the eastern Bell Tower in every Plaza state is a Rocket Nozzle Box that is very difficult to access.

  • Internally, depending on the Plaza state, this Rocket Nozzle Box is named "Nozzle Box (Rocket) 0"; While the accessable Rocket Nozzle Box by the fountain is named "Nozzle Box (Rocket) 1". The Rocket Nozzle Box in the tower being suffixed with "0" suggests that it was the first one placed in the Plaza.
  • Nozzle Boxes have a parameter called "[nozzletype]_nozzle_item" that's either set to "valid" (always openable) or "invalid" (only openable after a "valid" Nozzle Box is opened). The Bell Tower Nozzle Box's parameter is set to "invalid", making it inaccessible until Mario obtains the fountain Rocket Nozzle.
  • Strangely, F.L.U.D.D. does not tell you that it is a hologram when you touch it in its hologram form.

Misplaced Yellow Toad

Yellow Toad's rail is highlighted red.

Yellow Toad is present underneath the map running around near the Blue Coin Hut after unlocking Pinna Park. Yellow Toad's dialogue here is unique to himself and is only spoken during this Plaza scene:

Mario! The princess
was taken that way!
Across the river!

This happens due to the Toad's rail being misplaced, with one end placing him into the water, and the other through the wall. Australian/European release of the game fixed this error.

Broken Police Station Texture

Normal Plaza Flooded Plaza
SMS-PoliceStationTextureFail.png SMS-PoliceStationTextureFailFlood.png

In every Plaza state, the small space with a Blue Coin in the back of the Police Station was not texture mapped correctly... Additionally, during the flood, the walls of this box aren't shaded.

Missing Ferris Wheel Gondola Texture

Delfino Plaza Sirena Beach
SMS DP-FerrisWheelGondola.png SMS SB-FerrisWheelGondola.png

In every stage where Pinna Park is visible in the distance, an active ferris wheel object can be seen rotating in the distant Park; except Delfino Plaza. Instead, the ferris wheel is part of Delfino Plaza's map model, making it unable to rotate like in other stages. The gondolas on the ferris wheel weren't provided with any color either, rendering them white with just UV shading.

  • Camera was hacked for a better view.

Radio Tower Roof Texture

Regular Plaza Flooded Plaza
SMS-TVStation Roof Regular.png SMS-TVStation Roof Flooded.png

The corner texture of the Radio Tower's roof is mangled in every Plaza state except the flooded one.

Purple Toad

SMS-PurpleToadJacketColor.png

During the Delfino Plaza flood, Purple Toad's jacket is blue rather than purple. Typically, Toads wear jackets with a color corresponding to their mushroom color, but since Toads are modeled in grayscale, they pull both their jacket and mushroom colors from parameters; In this case, Purple Toad's jacket was accidentally left at its default value of 0 which calls blue.

Toadsworth

SMS-ToadworthStaffError.png

Toadsworth always carries his staff, but during the flood his staff is missing.
His size is also 25% smaller during the flood- being scaled 1:1 instead of *1.25 like Toads always are.

Misplaced Pianta

SMS-Chuckster-High.png

The Chuckster was placed in the air above the roof.

  • This can't be seen in-game as he falls during the cutscene.

Distorted Textures

During the flood, a handful of map textures are distorted.

Bianco Hills

Missing Sun

Episode 1 Episode 6
SMS Bia1Sun.png SMS-Bia6NoSun.png

The sun was never added to Episode 6.

Misplaced Tree

SMS Bianco Hills Misplaced Tree.png

In Episodes 7 and 8, a tree is placed outside one of the bounding walls of the stage.

Ricco Harbor

Invisible Barrel

An invisible barrel can be found at the beginning of Episode 1 after triggering the Gooper Blooper battle. Strangely, the invisible barrel has no collision on the sides, but does on top.

Misplaced Pianta

SMS RiccoMisplacedPianta Viewer.png

A Pianta near the umbrellas in Episode 8 is placed high above the ground.

Rail Texture

SMS-BlooperRailTex.png

The texture mapping of a rail at the start of the Blooper race is a bit... odd.

Pinna Park

Shadow Mario's Block Stand

SMS ShadowMarioStand.png

On Pinna Beach, Shadow Mario is standing on top of a small block to give off the illusion he is standing on the ground. Removing the block from underneath his feet reveals it has no real purpose as he can stand perfectly fine on the ground.

Unused Warp

Blue box is the warp dimensions.

After the Mecha-Bowser appearing cutscene, Mario warps to the map pinnaParco6, where you're instantly greeted with the director of the park while locked into dialogue, warping you to the Mecha-Bowser battle map once the dialogue ends. Despite this, a warp point exists in this map at the roller coaster's entrance which warps Mario to the Mecha-Bowser battle map upon contact.

Noki Mistakes

Noki Girl Noki Boy Elevated Noki
SMSNoki noshellGirl.png SMSNoki noshellBoy.png SMS-ElevatedNokiPinna.png

Also in pinnaParco6, since Mario is unable to move during the dialogue, only a small portion of the park is visible. Exploring this map reveals two Nokis are lacking their distinct features. Additionally, the girl Noki at the gate was placed far above the ground (falling when the map is loaded).

Unobtainable Water Bottle

SMS Misplaced Water Bottle.png

During the Mecha-Bowser fight, there's a water bottle placed on top of the first roller coaster loop. This bottle doesn't disappear like normal bottles and cannot be collected.

Misplaced Trees

Also during the Mecha-Bowser fight, all but one tree are either misplaced or missing from the map. Since the tree shadows are not objects but rather map textures, their shadows still remain where the trees were intended to be. It's possible these could be remnants of an earlier map layout.

Ferris Wheel

Viewing the park from Pinna Beach in Episode 3, the ferris wheel can be seen rotating quickly. The only mission where the ferris wheel rotates quickly is in Episode 5, but there the ferris wheel as seen from the beach is rotating at its regular pace. This suggests that Episodes 3 and 5 may have switched places during development.

Unobtainable Coconut

Sunshine MisplacedCoconut.PNG

In every Episode except 4, below Pinna Beach near the cannon is a unobtainable coconut.

Unobtainable Bananas

High above Pinna Beach in every Episode except 1 and 2, is a banana bunch that is not reachable without the use of Yoshi's infinite flutter-jump glitch.

Palm Tree Lamppost Climbing

SMS MetalPalm InvisiblePole.png

In the Casino in Episode 4, the south-east lamppost can be climbed on due to an invisible pole object existing within the decoration. This was removed in the Episode 5 Casino.

King Boo's Goodies

10 Red Peppers 10 Yellow Coins 2 Bloopers
SMS-OoB Peppers.png SMS-OoB Coins.png SMS-OoB Bloopers.png

Outside the boundaries of King Boo's arena are 10 red peppers, 10 yellow coins, and 2 Bloopers which unload instantly upon entering the stage. These objects are not used as placeholders, leaving them as likely leftovers.

Noki Bay

Unlayered Goop

In Episode 1, the effect layers are missing from the goop, making it a static image. The goop on the walls are unaffected by this.

Tall Cannon

SMS-CannonHeight.PNG

The height of the cannon in Episode 1 is scaled 5x taller, but scales correctly in-game.

(Source: Inkstar)

Misplaced Shine Spawn

SMSMisplacedShine.png

Noki Bay's 100-coin Shine Sprite always lands on top of the tallest shell tower, but in Episode 8 the spawn is placed at around the curvature of the shell instead.

Corona Mountain

SMS-CoronaRocketSquare.png

Next to the stand with the Rocket Nozzle box is a square of tiles. This was likely planned to be, or was a spot for the Rocket Nozzle box at some point in development.
