Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.

Hmmm...
To do:
Can voice test be triggered using the game interface? What else could be found using a debugger?

Voice Test Mode

Open a save game (.EHS file) in a hex editor and change byte 0x21 to 0xF0 (actually any value starting 0xF) and then load the game and confirm. You'll be taken to a window full of just the tatami mat texture where you can test the lines of dialogue in the game.

  1. Click on the screen (input box will appear).
  2. Enter the number of the line of dialogue you want to test [range 0 to 880 inclusive].
  3. Optional: tick the checkbox if you want the dialogue to appear from top left corner (default is bottom right corner).
  4. Click the button.
  5. Dialog and voice will play.

You will need to quit the game completely to exit this mode. Restore your save game or use another to start playing the game normally.
