Saints Row (2006)/Oddities
This is a sub-page of Saints Row (2006).
To do: There's so much more... |
Filename Oddities
Real-Life Brands
Some filenames refer to real-life brands and copyrighted material, which were all obviously used as placeholders before they settled with ficitious logos:
- The Snail Mail graphic is referred to as "uspslogo" internally, standing for the United States Postal Service.
- The sign for Estro-Gen beer found at Brown Baggers' shops is referred to as "bweiserneon", which is short for Budweiser. Oddly, the "B" from the logo is left over in the model itself.
- The newspaper graphic is referred to as "thechronic", named after the Dr. Dre album of the same name rather than the final's "The Chronical". The earlier graphic is present in the pre-X05 build.
- The textures for the static planes seen at Wardill Airport are referred to as "hawker800ex", likely referring to the real-life Hawker planes of the same name.
Earlier Names
A handful of graphical and textual filenames have earlier names for specific elements:
- The Vice Kings in the notoriety_spawn.xbtl, message.xbtl file are referred to as the "Vice Lords" instead, the real-life gang that it's based on.
- The logo for The Big Picture cinema is referred to as "the_thename", likely as a placeholder.
- The logo for Rim Jobs is referred to as "rimjob_dec_co". Though assumed to be a typo, it's actually a slightly earlier name, as evidenced by an existing billboard graphic.
- There are earlier sound files for the Eye for an Eye commercial and phone calls, which are called "LOA_LOU".
- Files for the Mayhem Activity are referred to as "Vandal" or "Vandalism", which may have been the earlier name for the Activity. Oddly, the Achievement for completing all levels of each location is named after its earlier name.
- Files for the Snatch Activity refer to it as "Pimping".
- Strings for Loan Office refer to it as "Loan Shark".
- In clothing_shops.xbtl, the jewellery shop is referred to as "Bling Baby" whereas in the final it's called On Thin Ice. A shop with a similar name, Bling Bling, would appear in Saints Row 2.
Revised Cutscenes?
To do: Find a way to arrange this... |
A handful of cutscenes have "V_" attached to the end of them, ranging from V2-V5, which potentially shows that it has gone through changes during development. There is further evidence of it from the demo version.

Earlier Cutscene Locations
- Oddly, the "Straight and Narrow" Racing Activity cutscene lists it as taking place in the Airport District, but it takes place in the Docks and Warehouses District in the final.
Missing Vehicle Data
Files car_2dr_compact02, car_2dr_luxury03, car_2dr_sports01, car_2dr_sports02, car_4dr_luxury02, car_4dr_standard04, sp_charterbus01, and truck_2dr_pickup01 are apparently missing from the misc and misc2 folders, implying that those vehicles were cut during development. None of these vehicles appear in Saints Row 2, either.
Switched SFX
The siren sound effects for the Ambulance actually uses FIRETRK_SIREN_LOOP, as opposed to AMBLNC_SIREN_LOOP in the final. The only existing "fire truck" in the game, the Nightngale, reuses the SFX from the Five-O. It was likely changed to give the Ambulance a distinct siren sound.
Miscellaneous
- In the bitmapsheets file, there are two duplicate map graphics for Foreign Power, listed as "map_store_cardealer_high" and "map_store_cardealer_low". There is no second car dealership to be found that sells cars for a lower price.
- Many of the phasefive files date back to August-December 2004.
- The audio files for the train PA announcements played at various stations in Brighton are titled AMB_EXT_PA_TYARD_ARRIVE and AMB_EXT_PA_TYARD_DEPART. "TYARD" likely stands for "Trainyard", likely referring to the scrapped location around the On Track Club.
- The radio commercials for Friendly Fire have a skipped entry inbetween COM_FFIRE_01 and COM_FFIRE_03.
Texture Oddities
Theft Icon Oddity
Though not unused, the target for the Theft Diversion uses this otherwise-repurposed Activity icon (map_start_theft) rather than the usual blips on the radar.
Scrapped Rim Jobs Sign Texture Leftover
Though not unused, the filename (b46_sign_wo) refers to it as a texture for a sign rather than as a poster. In the E3 2005 build, there was originally a sign for Rim Jobs but was removed in the final.
Calendar
The calendar (sign_a01_calendar) found in various locations, while hard to make out, is for the month of September 2001, judging from the order the days are numbered in. This doesn't point to any evidence that the game was in development back then, likely due to originally being a stock image.
Laptop Wallpaper
Texture | Rotated | Azul Wallpaper |
---|---|---|
The wallpaper used on the laptop found inside Johnny Gat's office in the Church is actually a modified version of the Azul wallpaper that comes with Windows XP, where the cloud particles were cloned, while the island and yacht were completely removed. This is likely due to the image being rights-managed at that time, though it would eventually be made royalty-free on Getty Images in 2020.
Hidden Police Badge
To do: Upload a model of it, too. |
The police badge Troy looks at in the Salting The Earth cutscene actually has an open-up flap, along with a hidden ID card and a fully-modeled reflection texture! The photo of Troy also looks different.
It's also present in Saints Row 2.
Volition Inc. Form?
The car_papers_wo graphic found in Rim Jobs contains some sort of Volition Inc. slip, as is evidenced by the "V-head" logo.
Earlier Car Designs
A handful of graphics around the world have somewhat earlier-looking car designs:
Texture | Final (Render) |
---|---|
An earlier version of the Mockingbird and Fer de Lance car renders found in Rim Jobs garages, labelled as "car_poster1_ca" and "car_poster2_ca".
- The Fer de Lance had different headlights.
- The Mockingbird had different headlights and an additional decal on the door.
Reflection Textures
refgenericoutside
Ripped Graphic | Assembled |
---|---|
Reflection textures called ref_generic_outside found in sr_alwaysload_user contain early images of Plisen, from what seems to be before the E3 2005 build judging from the placeholder-y roads, but it's actually from post-E3 2005 because the map in the CGI trailer had a building rather than a truck trailer yard.
The same texture can be found in Saints Row 2, albeit in black and white.
refinsidecol and refinsidemon
Found in the chunks is a reflection map called refinsidecol and refinsidemon, respectively which are the interiors of the Nivida Headquarters used as reflections.
Early Foreign Power Name in LOD Texture
Demo Texture | Final Texture |
---|---|
The LOD texture for Foreign Power buildings has a logo different from the final version. The demo's higher-resolution texture reveals it was originally called "Zatro Mobiles."
Downscaled Text
The majority of the textures in the game are downscaled to the point where text can be hard to make out. Some of these consist of interesting notes or easter eggs.
Watershed Sign
NO TRESSPASSING City of McInferiorville(?) WATERSHED VIOLATERS WILL BE ARRESTED ORS 164.245 MCMANNYVILLE WATER & LIGHT (500) 472-6458(?)
A curious sign on a watershed found in the Docks (a11_sign1_tm.dds) that says what could possibly say "McInferiorVille" in the first sentence, or "McMannyville" on the final sentence. It's likely one of Stilwater's early names.
Drink Machine Flavors
The two "flavors" that come with the drink machine inside cinemas say "Orange Beans" and "Rotting Fruit".
Wine Bottle Cover
The writing on the wine bottle graphic (winebttl_b01_dec2) says "Volition Inc."
Diploma
Four different diplomas seen in various office buildings in Stilwater, predating Stilwater University in the next game, all have the honorable name of "Cornelius Mockup" on them.
Garbage Tire Marking
Though not unused, the texture for the tires found within garbage has writing that can be hard to see. It says "Smokin' Wheels, Kenny Thompson's". The texture was made slightly more readable in Saints Row 2.
CD Album Track Names
CD Album discs (labelled as cdstack_back1 and cdstack_back2) found in various places like Scratch That have barely-readable "track names", consisting of humorous developer notes.

Sea Roses Bar Review Text
The Sea Roses Bar located in Sunnyvale Gardens has a news clipping (i14_newspaper_wo.dds) that is almost hard to make out due to the downscaled graphics.
THE SEA ROSES PUB ROUGHEST BAR NONE? -------------------------------- There is nothing like a relaxing drink after a hard day's work, right? Think again. It seems the recent increase in violence is taking place in (secret) pubs. According to a recent break later violent pubs it was concluded that the SEA ROSES pub was on top of the list where it can be violent side. In just the last 3 months, 8 people have been killed following a (debark) in this rough bar. Other violent pubs (levitate) such pubs as FLYING BADGET and KINGS CAVERN. The landlord of the sun propet is konwn for giving the following statement; "it has been a long time that finally we are here. I would like to thank all those that helped me activate this side". Next week we shall be with the roughest hecklers.
Overworld
To do: Cutscene-only locations:
|
Hidden Door Texture
A hidden door texture can be found on the rooftop of Hapton Hotel, which isn't normally viewable. It would be functional in Saints Row 2 with the addition of helipads.
Openable King Penthouse Reception Door
Completing or replaying the All The King's Men mission and getting to the King Penthouse lobby will cause the doors to be opened, which always stay closed for the remainder of the game. The lobby in normal gameplay will appear deserted, without an access point or an elevator going to the top floor.
Miscellaneous
Unfinished Spanish Translation
While all of the other gameplay elements were translated, the cutscenes remain in English.
Scrapped Radio Song?
One of the interstitial clips for The Faction 99.8 (998FAC_SWEEPER6) briefly contains a sample of Down On It by Nine Inch Nails, even though the song isn't included in the final game. Idents in the following game would use samples of songs.
Missing Temperature Clips?
During weather reports on Radio Stations, they would say the temperature (in Farenheit) after telling the weather. Though, only four of the stations mention it being 42°F on rainy or cloudy days.
Filename | Station | Audio | Dialogue (Transcribed) |
---|---|---|---|
922KRO_WX_42 1036FOU_WX_42 1066KRU_WX_42 |
The Kronic 92.2 Four-20 103.6 The Krunch 106.6 |
All girl got her indicator on, it's 42°F in Stilwater. | |
922KRO_WX_42 | The Rock 94.8 | 42°F in Stilwater. |
Curiously, two stations (Ezzzy 105 FM and 106.6 The Krunch) makes a mention of the temperature being 69°F, even though both of the voice clips are the same.
Filename | Station | Audio | Dialogue (Transcribed) |
---|---|---|---|
1066KRU_WX_69 SR1_1050EZZ_WX_69 |
Ezzzy 105 FM 106.6 The Krunch |
Don't forget, it's always 69°F in Stilwater! |
Goliath Spawn Oddity
The Goliath used in the Westside Rollerz arc final mission "Semi-Charmed Life", actually spawns in Copperton after completing it. Though it's driveable, it cannot be obtained or customized as it will be too big for a garage. If the vehicle is destroyed, it will never be respawned ever again unless the player reloads their save with it, untouched.
Save Prompt Error?
Before Saints and Martyrs, the player is prompted to save their game before entering the yacht. If they do so, and reload their save, they'll be outside the Saints Row Loft Crib in a unique location rather than at the King Penthouse. Saving their game manually outside of the yacht will still make them end up at the King Penthouse.
