This is a sub-page of Proto:Grapple Dog.

To go along with the rest of Steam Next Fest 2021, a playable demo of Grapple Dog was released on Steam on October 1, 2021 (though its manifest creation date is September 22, 2021). The demo features three playable levels (Outset Mountain, Mushroom Grotto and Riding Rails) and a Rex boss fight, before being booted out to the main menu asking you to wishlist the game. The game's demo would get delisted around three weeks before release.

Oh, but did we mention that this is the full game, a whopping 4 months before release? Simply setting the variable global.demoMode to 0 (and global.debugInputs to 1 to avoid softlocks) would let you play the full game in all of its unfinished, untiled, missing sound effects glory. With this being a "demo" available to the public with free will to be modified, a lot of levels were removed in an update released three days later.

Splash Screens

  • The splash screens have no audio.
  • There's no splash screen for Super Rare Originals.
  • All of the screens are still images and not animated. Because of this, the Medallion Games logo is smaller and the iGame.Audio logo bigger.

  • The logo had a much more basic grapple with a matching brown outline and no details.
  • The "Start" and button prompt were on one line.
  • Pablo's bouncing animation is much slower.
  • There's no music, only the ambience of the boat sailing.

Early Textsheet

Just like gd_ui_text.csv, the same happened with gd_textsheet.csv, where an autosaved version of the file was pushed onto Steam. The end result is that this sheet contains extra dialog that was removed to possibly avoid spoilers before release, but with this file being part of the demo's files, that was not the case.

Line Unused Used Description
14 Restart Stage Restart Level Self explanatory.
90 / 100 "Long ago, the people of Partash lived in hunger and hardship." intro_text All of the intro dialog was removed and replaced with intro_text.
119 You see that there big chest over there? It's got something in you gotta use to get us outta here. You see that big chest over there? It's got something in you gotta use to get us outta here. The tutorial dialog with Nul, a typo was fixed.
174 / 183 "Greetings, Pablo." wizard_text Dialog with the wizard NPCs that you encounter at Trials of Valour. Just like the intro dialog, it was removed and replaced.

Everything after line 197 is boat interior dialogue was removed completely and will crash the game if you talk to any NPCs that direct to these nonexistent lines.
