Proto:Command & Conquer: Generals/Build 98 Alpha/Models/GLA
This is a sub-page of Proto:Command & Conquer: Generals/Build 98 Alpha/Models.
Contents
Airfield
At some point in the game's development, the GLA had an Airfield and likely an air force to go along with it. Because of a change in the game's design, the GLA were stripped of their would-be aerial force.
Angry Mob
The fat angry mob has exposed butt cheeks in this build; the texture was changed in the final game. The angry mob member that wears a red bandana in the final game looks completely different in this build. The most notable difference is the yellow cross on his gray vest, which doesn't fit considering what the GLA are supposed to be.
Assassin
Now, this is a unit that doesn't have a counterpart in the final game. Perhaps the Assassin was to serve the GLA as a sniper unit. They might've been not a full fledged unit but an upgrade to an existing unit, since his only text string is found among the upgrade strings, and is written like one.
There is no available animation set.
Barracks
The GLA Barracks in the prototype doesn't have the GLA logo on it, there are no significant differences other than that. However...
The night version of the previous conditions show an older iteration of the GLA Barracks, faithfully modeled after its concept art. It seems the developers, when they compiled this build, either did not bother to update the night conditions to match the newer design or forgot to do so altogether.
Command Center
The Command Center model in this build is based off the concept art and is a quite an interesting design for a Command Center.
It appears in the first trailer for the game, moments before getting destroyed by an air bomb.
Hijacker
The Hijacker has a green briefcase in his model, for some reason. His texture is small and less detailed and thus, it doesn't show his face.
His animation set is missing from the build, however the model itself contains a single animation in which his antenna moves.
Jarmen Kell
The build contains some early Jarmen Kell models with old textures, one of which seems to duel wield knifes with his sniper rifle on the back. Both models lack animations, however.
Quad Cannon
This early Quad Cannon model, which has an old faction color scheme, can be seen in some prerelease screenshots. It, alongside most other GLA models, were retextured so as the GLA could have a consistent artstyle.
Rebel and Tunnel Defender
Originally, both the Rebels and the Tunnel Defenders looked the same, save for their weapons, obviously. They were changed so the players could tell them apart easily, though this change seems to have come pretty late since they are still shown like this in many screenshots, the intro of the original game and even the game's packaging.
Rocket Buggy
These models were made for the Rocket Buggy when it was redesigned from a Chinese unit into a GLA unit, though it still looks similar to its predecessor.
Scorpion
Same with the Buggy, these models were created when the Scorpion became a GLA unit. However, they are just lazy recolorings of the original Chinese Scorpion.
Stinger Soldier
Other than a smaller and less detailed texture, the Stinger Soldiers are same as those of the final game.
Their animation set is available and is the same as that of the final game.
Technical
These are the old Technical models; only the first variant can be seen in a prerelease screenshot. As with the Quad Cannon, these were retextured so as the GLA could have a consistent artstyle.
Terrorist
Compared to the other GLA infantry units whose textures are almost the same as the final game but lower in quality, the Terrorist's texture looks completely different from what was used for the final game.
His animation set is missing from the build.
Toxin Truck
This Toxin Truck looks much bigger and heavier than in the final game. On the other hand, it does not look too much like a tractor, though it may not have been intended to. This old version of the Toxin Truck is based off concept art drawn by TJ Frame. The final game model is based off concept art drawn by Phil Robb.
Windmill
The GLA had access to a source of power in the form of a basic and humble Windmill before it was removed from the final game, probably to make the GLA stand from the rest of the factions by not having to rely on power. However, there's still quite a lot of Windmill residue in the game's code.
The Windmill shows up in some prerelease videos and in the GLA victory screen in the final game.
As with the GLA Barracks, the night version of the previous conditions also show an older iteration of the Windmill, again based off the concept art. It seems the developers, when they compiled this build, either did not bother to update the night conditions to match the newer design or forgot to do so altogether.
