This page details pre-release information and/or media for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Timeline

1999

  • March 2-April 22 - Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is added to the Nintendo Power Source website under the name of "Super Mario Bros." The website listed the game to have no backup save feature and with the game's filesize as unknown (changed a few days later to "TBD").
  • May 10 - The game is released in North America.
  • July 1 - The game is released in Europe.

2000

The most notable thing about this early screenshot is the HUD, which uses a different style than the final. From left to right:

  • The font is the shadowed style from the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. The final just uses the one from the original game.
  • An "S" is present next to the score display, which was removed from the final.
  • The timer has a "T" to the left, which was replaced by a clock icon in the final.

The last two changes were likely to make the HUD less crowded and easier to read.

Along with the early HUD being present, the bush has eyes like it did in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, and the brick has its additional shading from that game as well. The final just uses the ones from the original game.

Nintendo E3 1999 Image CD

A CD containing preview images for Nintendo's E3 1999 lineup was given to gaming outlets. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was one of the games shown off.

  • The "Clear List" bar is missing.
  • The 5 in this image is the same one from the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, albeit with an invisible shadow since it is on a black background. Other screenshots don't have this, weirdly enough. Perhaps the map lives count was one of the last places to have the font changed.

Gameplay

  • The UI has a different clock that only has a white outline and shorter clock hands.
  • In 2-1, the Goombas are much closer to each other and appear after the Paratroopas, whereas in the final game they appear before the Paratroopas.

VS 2-1?

What appears to be a section that closely resembles 2-1.

  • This part of the level was reworked to have trampolines.
  • The coin counter shows there were coins early on in the level.
  • The players may have started this level (and possibly all levels in a VS Game) in their Super forms, as both brothers are in their Super forms before they have reached the point where the powerup-containing block is in the final version of the level.

Unknown VS Level

This VS level is unlike anything shown in the final game. It has a trampoline section, which may indicate this was 2-1, but there's a castle background, which no VS level has.

VS Victory Screen

  • The text "Mario Wins!" has a gold shade.
  • The letters were positioned lower and were smaller in size.
  • The sprites for Mario and Peach were different, having different proportions and no shading in this earlier version.
