This game was never completed and/or given a public release.
As a result of this, keep in mind that the developers might have used or deleted some of the content featured here, had the game actually been released.

Pickles is a tech demo created to showcase Santa Cruz Games' in-house cross-platform engine for game development. It made a showing at Game Connection 2006, and in 2023 an NR disc containing the prototype was sold to Cake and released by Hard4Games on September 18 of that year.

Alex Neuse, project manager at Santa Cruz Games, claimed they were "not specifically pitching it to publishers", but the fact the disc has a video file namedropping Sammy Studios suggests otherwise.

Unused Sounds

Hmmm...
To do:
/files/audio/demo.spd probably contains some sound effects not used by any actors in-game. Even though they are accessible from the sound test, it might still be worth documenting.

Multiple backup Sound Pipeline Demo (*.spd) files were left on the disc, charting the development of the sound effects. Only tracks that are not found in the final /files/audio/demo.spd (which has 87 tracks) are listed.

/files/audio/olddemo.spd (and its identical copy /files/audio/old/olddemo.spd) has three tracks:

Track # Sound Description
1
A monkey voice heard in the final game, sampled at 5kHz rather than 48kHz.
2
A monkey screech. It sounds like anguish.
3
Deep engine rumblings.

/files/audio/preeggbackup/demo.spd (and its identical copy /files/audio/new/demo.spd) has 42 tracks.

Track # Sound Description
7
Honk.
16
Fire crackling.
18
24
Cartoon slide whistle and other comical SFX.
25
More comical SFX.
26
Rising xylophone scale.
28
Marching music.

/files/audio/old/demo.spd has 71 tracks. It is close to the final demo.spd, with a few differences and missing tracks.

Track # Sound Description
22
Longer version of the final track 22.
30
Same as the final track 30, but it loops six times with a fadeout at the end.
40
Louder than the final track 40.
45
Louder than the final track 45.
46
Louder than the final track 46.
49
Same as the final track 49, but it only loops once.
65
Unique electricity sound.

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.

Many of these are leftovers from E.T.: Interplanetary Mission, another title developed by Santa Cruz Games. Almost all of them come in two formats: PSXteximage (*.tex) and GCMaterials (*.txg). Both formats support multiple images in one file, indicated by "(image #)" after the name. The GCMaterials image is usually flipped horizontally and may have transparency where the PSXteximage image has solid blue or black.

The TEX2TXG_log.txt document suggests images would first be converted to the PSXteximage format before being converted to the GCMaterials format, yet the PSXteximage format does not (appear to) support transparency, so solid blue or black could have been a primitive way of baking transparency information into a format that did not support it.
