Hmmm...
To do:
Try swapping files and see if they load or not. Also, check which of these files are actually used vs. unused, as the language in the article is a little confusing.

File Anomalies

Out of this World

Every world has 5 dedicated levels the player can access. This translates into almost every world having 5 dedicated level files. Out of this World (OotW), which is the name for the space world of the game, has two extra level files for a total of 7 files. The file names are listed below:

  • OOTW_LEVEL1.lev
  • ootw_level2a.lev
  • ootw_level2b.lev
  • ootw_level3.lev
  • ootw_boss1.lev
  • ootw_boss3.lev
  • ootw_bonus.lev

There are a few things of interest to point out. The most interesting thing is the fact that there are two level 2 files. It might be possible that the a and b stand for level revisions as the files do differ in size. It is likely that one of them is unused because no other level in the game has a copy of itself.

Another thing to note is how there are two boss levels. In this case, it might be possible that both levels are utilized in the game because the boss level is split into two sections which is unlike level two. However, the name of the boss files seem to imply that there was a boss2 level that was scrapped. This is supported by the fact that there are files that reference the scrapped boss2 file inside the records and objects folder.

The last point of interest is level 1. Capital letters aside, it has a modified date of 7/30/98 which is about 2 months before the final versions of the other level files were created. That makes it the oldest level in the final version of the game.

Level Revisions

Along with the level 2 of OotW, other levels in other worlds appear to have had level revisions. These levels are mentioned below:

  • atlantis_level3a.lev
  • carnival_level2a.lev
  • carnival_level3a.lev
  • pirates_level2a.lev
  • pirates_level3b.lev
  • fortress_level1a.lev
  • fortress_level2a.lev
  • fortress_level3b.lev
  • prehist_level1a.lev
  • prehist_level2a.lev
  • prehist_level3b.lev
