To do: Investigate the non-English versions with more than what is currently on this page. According to a comment in this Kotaku article, the servers of the Japanese version were isolated from the international ones, apparently leading to servers shutting down not so long after launch. Verify this. List every instance of changes, like the Movie Censorship page below. Was the temperature declaration changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius outside of the Japanese release for non-American releases? Anymore script changes in the non-English versions?

Duke Nukem Forever received a fair few changes for international audiences.

General Differences

The German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese versions have all of their voice work re-dubbed into their respective languages. The Japanese dub is only available in the Japanese release unsurprisingly.

Spanish Version

The Spanish translation/dub localization went the extra mile in detail by changing the "Yeah, but after twelve fucking years, it should be." dialogue line and comical reference to the game prolonged development cycle to a probably more accurate fourteen years timeframe, which supposedly owes to the fact that the Quake 2 engine iteration of Duke Nukem Forever was originally announced in 1997. The "twelve years" timeframe in the English dialogue seems to stick to the 1999-2011 copyright presented within the game.

Japanese Version

The much later released Japanese version had many changes done to it, mainly removing violence and nudity.

To do: Add these All human characters in the Japanese version stay "in one piece". Thus, there is no more mutilation or dismemberment. This also includes the corpses that are just lying around for decoration. While the uncensored versions show corpses that miss out on a limb here and there, all extremities stay where they belong in the Japanese version. Even the textures that represent the damage were covered up. Also, all severed heads were deleted. All images of breasts were censored out, with the exception of the image of a breast being drawn on a blackboard in the "Duke Nukem's Titty City" level. The temperature declaration was changed from °F (Fahrenheit) to °C (Celsius) in several sequences. This has no effect on the gameplay. The Downloadable Content option in the main menu doesn't exist. It also never existed, as this version was never patched. The Japanese version uses a different in-game font.

To do: Add Japanese cutscene to the comparison table. Investigate if this is consistent with all versions outside the English one.

Much like the Spainish version, the Japanese version also corrected the "twelve fucking years" line to the more accurate fourteen years.

Duke Nukem's Titty City

One of the most well-known changes in the Japanese release is the vibrator and condom used in the fetch quest in Duke Nukem's Titty City were replaced with a Duke figure and construction helmet. The corresponding dialogue was changed as well:

There'll be a lap dance... and caaake." Duke: "Okay baby, I can dig that role-play shit. YOU tell ME what to do!" Stripper: "Okay then! Well first I'm kind of hungry, so I need something to nibble on. And then, I need something naughty to play with. And then, well, a girl has to play it safe, even with you, Duke."

Duke: "Am I dreaming? Now this is great." Striper: "Hey, Duke. Wanna play a fun game? I'll be your boss, and you'll take orders from me. What do you think? Your reward will be a sexy dance and sweet cake." Duke: "Okay, baby. I'll play your game. Tell me what you want me to do." Stripper: "In that case, first, I'm hungry. Bring me something I can snack on. And I'll also want a sexy figure that looks like a certain someone. And if you can get me a helmet, I'll do some kinky role-playing for you."
