Dragon Quest Builders 2/Revisional Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Dragon Quest Builders 2.

Hmmm...
To do:
Regional model differences:
  • Bab's Sign reflects her localized name in different languages
  • The Cottontail Costume changing its sleeve cuffs to wristbands

The game was updated extensively for several months after its release in Japan. Most of these features were made available in what amounts to a day-1 patch for international players. Aside from the usual Dragon Quest localization seasoning added to the game's text and character names, any regional revisions of the core story seem to be relatively minor to nonexistent.

Characters

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Check if I missed anyone.
  • The two JP "Captain" name strings for Brownbeard and Whitebones may be unused/incorrect for the purposes of this chart, check their names in dialogue later.

Not at all unusual for Dragon Quest, many characters have different names between Japanese and English.

Generic villagers are simply named "farmer A", "farmer B", all the way up to H in Japanese. This seems to have done to resemble the naming conventions of random encounters in the mainline games. The English version instead gives them alliterative aliases. The generic monster villagers in Malhalla retain the alphabetic naming scheme in the English release.

A small sampling of the generic name changes are provided below.

Japanese Translation English
農民(のうみん) farmer A fervent farmer
A ruffian A stout sort
B ruffian B flexing fellow
バニーA bunny A showy showgirl
バニーB bunny B perky performer
兵士(へいし) soldier A cunning cadet

Interestingly, the localization changes the unseen strings for the Midenhall castle illusions from "ローレシア", Midenhall's Japanese name, to "Rendarak". Both names are correct for the context, and seems to have been mostly made for clarity, as the location is mostly referred to as Rendarak ingame.

Some examples are provided below.

Japanese Translation English
Fake Midenhall King Fake Rendarak King
Midenhall Guard Rendarak Guard

Locations

The story islands, except Moonbrooke, all received new localized names.

Japanese Translation English
Empty Island Isle of Awakening
Monzola Furrowfield
Okkamur Khrumbul-dun
Prison Island Skelkatraz
Planet Sidoh Malhalla
Bossfight Island Battle Atoll

East/West mistranslation

A relatively minor line of dialogue said by Rosie before the Harvest Festival incorrectly denotes that Moonbrooke lies to the east of Furrowfield. This can easily be disproven by looking at the world map for two seconds. Granted, the player will not be unlocking Moonbrooke as a location until several dozen hours of playtime after this text is shown. The Japanese release correctly states that Moonbrooke is to the west of Furrowfield.

Japanese Translation EN
Apparently there's a big city called Moonbrooke far to the west of Furrowfield. I'd love to go there someday!! I hear there is a great, glittering city called Moonbrooke on an island far to the east of here. I've always dreamed of going to visit.
