Dutch Localization
The European version was modified to use the language that was set in the GameCube's BIOS. When the game loads a file, it checks the following:
- The text at the end of the file (see table below)
- The contents in a folder (see table below)
_us = All Languages _uk = English _fr = French _de = German _es = Spanish _it = Italian _nl = Dutch
While there was no Dutch translation for Donkey Konga 2, the game still looks for content that contain _nl in the file/folder if the GameCube's BIOS is set to Dutch.
So it is possible to modify the game to load certain files if the GameCube's BIOS is set to Dutch.
Europe (English) | Europe (Dutch) |

Region Change (Debug Menu)
The International versions contain a file called RegionChange.res. It contains the following text:
# RegionChange TITLE=Region Change UK=United Kingdom DE=Germany FR=France ES=Spain IT=Italia NL=Netherlands JP=Japan US=United States
This is leftover text that was used from Donkey Konga's Debug Menu that allowed you to change the game's language.
Song Genres
USA Version
While the USA version doesn't display the Song Genre, it's still possible to have the game display them. All that was added was a compare instruction to check if you are in the Song Selection Menu. If so, the code to display the Genre would be skipped.
In the Start.dol file, go to location 3EAE8 and replace the following 8 bytes with: 60 00 00 00 60 00 00 00
USA |
---|
The genre names that would now appear are shown below:
- Genre 0 = GAME
- Genre 1 = J-POP
- Genre 2 = ANIME
- Genre 3 = TV
- Genre 4 = CLASSIC
- Genre 5 = LATIN
- Genre 6 = CM
- Genre 7 = KIDS
- Genre 8 = JAZZ
- Genre 9 = 予備 2 (Spare 2)
- Genre 10 = 予備 3 (Spare 3)
These are the genres from the Japanese version that are translated into English (and written in capital letters). What's interesting is the Jazz genre since the Japanese version doesn't even use that one. Although the sequel Donkey Konga 3 did have a Jazz song where ジャズ (Jazz) was used.
The genre colors have been swapped in the USA version. This was done since the songs only use Genre 1 and Genre 2.
Genre # | USA | Japan / Europe |

The genre colors can be changed. In the Start.dol file, they are located between: DC2E0 - DC313
There are 12 colors that can be used:
00 = Blue 01 = Violet 02 = Brown 03 = Cyan 05 = Green 06 = Lime 07 = Orange 08 = Light Pink 09 = Pink 0A = Purple 0B = Red 0D = Yellow
The colors Light Pink, Pink, Violet, and Brown are not used by default. By changing the values in the Start.dol file, this is what they look like:

Japan Version
The Japanese version uses the following genres:
- Genre 0 = ゲーム (Game)
- Genre 1 = J-POP (J-Pop)

- Genre 3 = TV (TV)
- Genre 4 = クラシック (Classical)
- Genre 5 = ラテン (Latin)

- Genre 7 = どうよう (Children)
- Genre 8 = 予備 1 (Spare 1)
- Genre 9 = 予備 2 (Spare 1)
- Genre 10 = 予備 3 (Spare 1)
Genre 6 isn't used. It may have been used on the 種のうた (The Seed Song), which is the song used in the Pikmin 2 Commercial, but that song is displayed under the TV Genre.
Genres 8 to 10 are not used.
Europe Version
The European version uses the following genres:
- Genre 0 = Game
- Genre 1 = Pop
- Genre 2 = Rock
- Genre 3 = Disco
- Genre 4 = Classical

- Genre 6 = Dance

Dixes's Notes
To do: The Japanese versions (Memo_tgs.res and Memo.res) contain some differences as well. |
The International versions have four files that are related to Dixie's Notes:
- Memo.res
- Memo_tgs.res
- Memo_tgs_us.res
- Memo_us.res
The Memo_tgs.res contains the original text from the Japanese version, while the Memo.res updates the text that talks about the Beat-mix mode that was introduced in the International versions (SHUFFLE is what it would have been called in the Japanese version, and was the name that was used in Donkey Konga 3).
The Memo_tgs_us.res is a translation of the Memo.res, while Memo_us.res is the one used in the final version that fixes grammar, text formatting, minor rewrites, and talks about the Beat-mix mode.

The original talks about Jam mode that was from the Donkey Konga and the Japanese version of Donkey Konga 2 where all the required notes to hit are not displayed (which was indeed a tough mode). Since the international versions replaced Jam mode with the more enjoyable Beat-Mix mode, the note instead explains that the notes change every time.
Memo_us.res | Memo_uk.res |
---|---|
In the European version, "tips" was replaced with "coins".
Memo_tgs.res | Memo.res |

The Japanese text was updated to talk about the Beat-Mix mode (where it would have been called SHUFFLE), although the text hasn't been aligned correctly.

Hey, DK and Diddy! As of now, I'd like to announce my career change to professional drummer! Give me a call if you ever need an extra pair of hands! |
It seems the early note was written with a demo in mind, so this insight into DK and Diddy's musical tastes was replaced with a filler note talking about Dixie herself.
