The Story - Nukem Forever

Dr. Proton's Evil Scheme

Doctor Proton set several large explosives (probably nuclear) in key locations along the San Andreas Fault. His plan was to separate the coast of California from the mainland, and form an independent country (Proton Island?) with he as its dictator. The president, only too happy to wash his hands of that part of the U.S., doesn't bother to send in the military. Superman tries to foil his scheme, but fails due to lack of fan interest.

Enter Duke, our hero

Duke was in Washington D.C. receiving piles of medals for saving the Earth from the alien invasion when Dr. Proton starts his evil plans. Seeing that the president isn't taking action, Duke decides to take it upon himself to liberate Proton Island. (This may have something to do with the condo he has in Malibu.)

Eva Pulitov the spy (Duke's ally -and- nemesis)

Eva Pulitov is a spy of unknown origin. Nobody knows where she came from or what her mission is, beyond stopping Proton. Well, -I- know, and I'm going to tell you, but it's important to note that the player will be in the dark about this, and that will give us our "cliffhanger" for episode 1. Eva is a "Protonite." That's the name I came up with for cyborg lackeys constructed by Proton. She is on a similar mission to Duke's: stop Proton. This means she's a traitor to her "master," hence all the secrecy. She wants Proton Island to remain American as well, and thus gain freedom and democracy for all Protonites. How emancipatory of her.

ABOUT EVA: This gives us opportunity to show some skin, but I want to be reasonable here. Let's not dress her up like "Shadow" in Eternal Champions. Sure, give her nice boobs and a nice ass, but I think she should be dressed in a black jumpsuit. This should make her look very spy-like. See the Rise of the Triad painting for what I'm talking about. Cut the neckline of her shirt as low as you want. I think she should have short black hair. And a cool utility belt. :-)

"Protonites"

Here is as good as anyplace to describe these guys. These are cyborgs constructed by Proton to do his dirty work. Like Terminator, they are flesh covering a metal endoskeleton. with the sprite layering technique you mentioned, this should be easy to accomplish. These guys will appear everywhere in the game. They drive the vehicles, operate machinery, get in Duke's way, and so on. They all wear the same uniform. They are pathetically easy to kill. (Except Eva... she must be a special military model. Why, I wouldn't be surprised at -all- if Eva ended up facing another model just like herself at some point in the game. Hmmm.)
