Environmental Hazards
This is the area where I'll jot down the various environmental things that can affect Duke.
Water
Duke can swim very well under water, though he moves more quickly with the Mini Sub. Without the mini-sub, Duke has a limited air supply. After a few seconds, his health will start to count down. Once it reaches zero, Duke dies. Have bubbles rise from him, and an underwatery noise like in Duke 3D.
Toxic Ooze
Duke will sometimes be forced to walk waist deep in this green stuff. While he's in it, the ooze does damage to him. Have Duke say "Ugh, gross!" or something, and have disgusting sticky sloshing noises.
Poison Gas
I was thinking that sometimes Duke might get caught in an area where gas is seeping in through the vents. We could have this either damage Duke, or disorient him and make him difficult to control.
Note: Making Duke hard to control may be a gameplay mistake. Have Duke sound like he's choking and coughing.
Fire
This hurts Duke more the more he's in it, of course. We should have Duke say something when he's hurt. Little "ooh! Ah! Yowtch! Hot!" expletives should be fine. Also, if you can get sound effects to pan at all, you should have the fire burning noise get louder as Duke approaches it. Perhaps Duke could make appropriate commentary as he approaches the fire, but before actually getting hurt.
Heights
Duke can fall quite a distance without harm. But if he falls farther than that distance, he starts to scream. Then the longer he falls the more damage the ground does to him when he lands. A good way to handle this might be like in the X-Men fighting game. Have Duke rotate around a bit the farther he falls, so that when he lands, he actually lands on his feet, or on his side, or on his head. Do damage accordingly.
Lighting
I would like for Nukem Forever to have dynamic lighting effects. Working light switches, glowing areas, and so forth. We could have night vision goggles like in Duke 3D.
