This page details one or more prototype versions of Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • There's a build marked as version "E.0", Nintendo's lotcheck/QA/release candidate terminology, dated September 30, 1999. The final build (v1.0 JPN) is dated October 17, 1999 and v1.1 is dated October 29, 1999. There are also two other builds, September 29, 1999 and October 6, 1999.
  • October 26, 1999 prototype of version 1.1
  • February 3, 2000 builds are in LZH files.
  • Investigate the March 31 2000 and February 21, 2002 US builds (why were they compiled?)

Sub-Pages

PokeGoldDemo-front 226.png
Spaceworld 1997 Demo
The famous playable build seen at Spaceworld '97. Features substantial differences from the final games, including a very different region, Kanto being shrunken down to a city, and the Pokémon selection being rather drastically different.

Spaceworld 1999 Demo
The build showcased at Spaceworld '99. Substantially closer to the final games but still has many differences, including scrapped trainers and quite a number of Pokémon whose designs weren't yet completed or refined.

September 29 & 30, 1999
Two Gold builds from late in development, compiled a day apart. There are still quite a few minor differences to the final, but the game is pretty close to done at this point.

October 6, 1999
With less than two weeks left before the final build, there are mostly only bugfixes left to go.
