Zelda's Adventure/Unused Graphics
This is a sub-page of Zelda's Adventure.
Most of Zelda's Adventure's unused graphics are scrapped NPC animations, with a few enemies and oddities scattered here and there.
Contents
Southwest Tolemac
The Plain of Andor beggar slamming her fist down in anger, probably due to Zelda refusing to help her and/or hitting her with her wand.
Lothar's idle sprite has legs that are obscured by the bar top he stands behind.
He also has an unused animation where he appears to wipe down said bar.
Some unused secondary animations belonging to the denizens of the Mobilin's Head Inn. The animation for Krebb (the red guy) is used whenever Zelda enters the Inn, but only plays for one frame before quickly changing to the used left-facing one.
The Forest of Ogham merchant has an unused animation where he waves goodbye.

Three variants of a torch are loaded in the Shrine of Earth. The game only uses the upright torch, leaving the slanted torches in the dark.
Central Tolemac
Side sprites for the living farmer in the Meadow of Skotness and the bored guy lounging near Great Wimbich's shops. Much like Krebb, their right-facing animations are used for a single frame after their respective screens have fully loaded.
Some cut angles for Great Wimbich's general store jester and blacksmith. The blacksmith's unused animation is used for a single frame, but, as you've probably guessed, doesn't get to play out fully. From here on out, these brief instances won't be mentioned unless there's something else about them that's noteworthy.
The occupants of the White Steed Lodge had their surplus animations stolen before the game's release. The single frame thing happens to the guests' right-facing sprites, but not the waiter's.
Shurmak stretching her arm out, likely to give Zelda some (similarly-cut) magic spells to try out.
Yalzan the gate guard waving his arm at Zelda. This is a completely different and unique animation from his regular one, believe it or not.
A red version of a Tumblebot. Its sprites are loaded in a single map: the area directly to the east of the Plain of Donora gate.
This small, Agwanda-esque blob would've been found and fought in the northwestern parts of the Barachno Marsh.
The Barachno Marsh merchant and Faust the Boatman both have unused secondary animations where they do... something. The first one might've been used for when Zelda buys an item, given the shopkeeper's outstretched arm.
Northeast and South Tolemac
Unused directional sprites for Toatobar and the sleeping man (men?) present in both Purano Village and the Great Dry Canyon. Not much to say here.
Scrapped secondary animations exist for a few characters across northeastern Tolemac. From left to right; Thabul, Bitterbeck, and Kron the Pegleg.
Aviana (unused) | Zelda |
---|---|
Unused directional sprites for Aviana's feather attack. Shrunken-down versions would be used for the projectiles spawned by the Feather spell.
Despite not moving at all, sprites of Gwynla walking in all four directions are loaded whenever she's visited. Lonlyn has unused animations, too, but they're not as interesting.
Cut animations of the old sailor and Toobar moving their right arms about. The old man's might've been for when he hands Zelda the Hourglass. Toobar's unused animation acts like the cut directional sprites and appears for a single frame, which is weird as it clearly isn't one.
It's time for some scrapped directional sprites straight outta South Port; the characters affected are the generic sailors, the pickpocket in the inn, and the sailor that takes you to Sea Island, respectively.

The Sea Monster never moves south enough to display the last two frames of its south-facing animation.
These shadowy versions of a Zol and an otherwise-unseen small blob (possibly a Gel or a projectile attack) are loaded in the Shrine of Water's opening area. A pre-release screenshot shows that there were once enemies in the first room of the Shrine of Earth. It's possible that the other Shrines had them as well - if so, this is almost certainly a leftover from that idea.
Most of the Plank's (huge) pickup sprite is obscured by a stalagmite wall it hides behind.

The last two frames for AgWanda's lone animation never play in-game, similar to the Sea Monster's.
East and Northwest Tolemac
Both rebels have secondary animations, but the one for the red-clad rebel never plays for whatever reason.
The second stall owner in the Shrine of Strength is waving goodbye, much like the Ogham shopkeeper. Goodbye!
Two unused animations exist for the thirsty child. Their intended use is unknown, though the second one might've been for when he hands out the Gold Necklace.
Scrapped turning frames for the targets in the Shrine of Strength's archery minigame.
Both of the field stallkeepers have an unused animation where they stretch out at least one of their arms. Possibly for when Zelda buys their respective tickets?
A scrapped character that would've appeared in the Shrine of Strength, after the room with the Green Knight. The Shrine has voice lines for three cut characters, so these sprites could've belonged to any of them.
The angry goblin in the Canvula village has walking sprites for all four directions, but he only walks south and west, leaving the north and east sprites unused.
The last character to have an unused animation is Ryco, the shopkeeper near the Shrine of Fire. Look at him go!
Misc.
A full number set is present for the inventory key counter, but nearly all of them go unused since Zelda comes across just two keys in the entire game and only holds one of them at a time.
There are two areas containing unused copies of enemy sprites, much like the items:
- The red Tektite's sprites are loaded in the Llort apparition room in the Shrine of Earth, which contains no enemies whatsoever.
- The sprites for the blue Tektite and Moby are loaded in the screen with three Mobilins south of Ethera and Ghini. There were plans to have one of each in the area, but they were removed before the game's release.
The metadata maps for several areas in Tolemac have a small rectangle at the top with the word "Origin" hidden in it. Both the rectangle and text are in separate, nearly-identical shades of green (used to display map parts over sprites); replacing one of the colors will show the aforementioned text. The maps in question are:
In addition, a couple of Shrine maps have the hidden Origin text. They are:
Metadata Map | Highlighted |
---|---|
The Blue Sardak's chamber in the Shrine of Earth |
|
The Shrine of Illusion's Pasquinade vision room |
|
The first Pol's Voice room in the Shrine of Destiny |
It's unknown what the purpose of the hidden text was, or why a small, random handful of maps have it.
