Game ID String

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: How exactly are the characters stored? What offset value is needed to convert the characters to katakana?

Yie Ar Kung-Fu features some string of text at the end of its ROM with the last two digits of its catalogue number in BCD (binary-coded decimal) format at the second-to-last byte, and the game's title in katakana written backwards. This is located at offset #3FF0.

This type of information would be included with most Konami MSX games until The Maze of Galious.

Revisional Differences

Yie Ar Kung-Fu got rereleased in 1988 as part of Konami Game Collection Vol. 1. Most games rereleased in the series got enhanced audio support for the SCC, specifically the Sound Cartridge included with Snatcher. However, in most cases having the Sound Cartridge installed in a slot would merely replace only the music, while keeping the PSG sound effects intact (excepting Gradius and TwinBee).

  • While 2 of the original tracks used only 2 PSG channels (with the other channel reserved for sound effects), the SCC versions use all 5 channels.
  • The SCC versions are not entirely 1:1 conversions of the PSG tracks. For example, on the Main BGM there are differences with the bassline, and even added countermelodies as well.
