The Japanese manual was made close to the game's completion, so most of the changes are minor.

The camera here is closer than the final game, the lives counter is lower than it should be, and the health bar seems to be "skinnier" than the final.

Many differences here:
- Sonic's animation has him looking down.
- The two red orbs representing the current progress are blue.
- Character names are listed below their selection instead of above and appear opaque at all times, instead of whenever they're unlocked.
- Different background selection circle.
