Debug Functions
Debug Mode
To do:
|
Debug mode only appears to be present in the American version. In versions 1-4, it is activated by shorting a solder jumper on the device's circuit board labelled JP3 DEBUG. Debug mode has two functions:
- The user can select any playable character, including unused ones, by scrolling with the A button immediately after the egg hatches at the start of the game.
- When the character is idle, the C button can be used to make time move rapidly, allowing a baby, child or teenage character to grow to the adult stage within minutes - it normally takes four days for a baby to grow into an adult. The C button is also used to turn off this mode.
Region Change
To do: Does anything notable happen when only JP1 or JP2 are shorted? |
This is activated in the same way as the debug mode, but instead the solder jumpers labelled JP1 and JP2 are shorted. This function turns the American version into the European version and like the debug mode, it only appears to be present on the American release.
ROM Testing
This is accessed by holding the A, B and C buttons down at once while pressing the Reset button. As well as testing the ROM it also tests pixels, the connection function and provides the device's internal version number.
Version 1
Unused Characters
These characters are playable using the debug mode.
Regional Differences
Japan and International
To do: Elaborate on which food. |
- In the Japanese version, some of the characters eat or drink different food
America and Europe
- The date system used is Day/Month on the European version and Month/Day on the American version
- The 'lbs' symbol is used on the American version, while a 'g' is used on the European version
- The word 'Gender' is used on the American version and 'Style' is used on the European version
- The word 'Generation' is shortened to 'Gene.' on the European version and "Gen." on the American version
- The phrase 'Time Out' is written as 'Punish' on the European version
- The 'Present' menu says 'Item' on the European version
- In the dance game, the word 'Watch' is displayed on the American version, while the European version says 'Dance'
- Upon losing a game the European version says "BAD~~" while the American version says "OK"
- The connection screen appears slightly different between each version
- The pause feature doesn't work on the European version
Given how many of the changed features of the American version were later found in the European release of the Version 2, it's likely that the American version was built later than the European version. This is supported by the fact that the European version lacks a region change feature and upon performing a ROM test the European version displays "Ver 2.1" while the American version displays "Ver 4.2" (though there may be more ROM versions).
Revisional Differences
To do: There are probably differences between early and late builds of the European and American versions. For this reason it's worth checking that all these differences are present in any given V1. Also, check how many of these features change when the 'region change' feature is enabled. |
Japan
To do: Compare the differing birthday animations |
An obscure variant of the Japanese version exists, differing from regular versions of the Plus only in that it has a unique birthday animation and features a unique character called "Metarutchi", which cannot be obtained but can be presented as a dating partner by the matchmaker.
Version 2
Unused Characters
These characters are playable using the debug mode.
