True Crime: New York City is the second, and what would end up being the last game in the series.

They're infamous for its buggy nature across its platforms, with the Xbox version containing a game-breaking glitch, and the GameCube version able to corrupt your memory card.

Hmmm...
To do:
*In the GameCube version, NPC_Cop contains an assload of placeholder dialog. There is also a placeholder and a dummy file.
  • Other boroughs of New York City are partially present, but were removed due to deadlines, and most streets and street names remain.

Debug Menu

Hmmm...
To do:
Describe what all the options do.
TC NYC Debug (1).png

To access the debug menu, go to the map/CompStat screen and press Right on the D-Pad and immediately press and hold both triggers (L1 and R1 on PlayStation 2). The screen should now go from the map to the music menu. Now release the triggers and press Left quickly.

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.

Test Missions

Hmmm...
To do:
* Get the rest of the screenshots.
  • Platform differences, likely. On me PAL PS2 game with TestLevel the whole map loads and you can get around and mess around. Additions made here are made using PAL PS2 perspective.

There are 25 test missions in total. All under the case name, Mision0.

TestLevel

True Crime- New York City-TestLevel.png

Has no real purpose other than the radio playing.

TestCarVariants

Loads the player near the police HQ with other character models.

TestLevelTerry

Loads the player into a place in Little Italy and uses the character model of Terry on player.

TestSubway

Black void.

TestInterior

Crashes while trying to load it.

TestTrack

Loads the player on a car way off outside the playable area.

TestDestruction

Spawns the player under Central Park.

TestFiringRange

Loads an area with the objective "Accuracy Challenge" but freezes if you go forward a bit. Using the debug camera one can skip to the end which has a door which likely tries to load an interior but crashes the game while transitioning to other coordinates. Not getting there actually lets the game finish showing you your time and score and then loads the player to the precinct.

Room

Black void with elevator music.

TestDrivingCourse

Loads an area with the objective "Respond To Call" but freezes if you go forward a bit. Getting out of the car and running around the edges of the area one can get to the end which again has a door which loads an interior. Getting to the very end of the intended track shows you your time and score and then loads the player to the precinct.

TestPolicePrecinct

Loads the police precinct interior.

TestGunShop

Loads a shop interior which loops if you try to leave.

FightArena

Loads an area with enemies, some melee weapons and one pack of evidence. Going to the other end gives a Drug Related Death as a random crime which doesn't really go anywhere.

Hallway

Crashes while trying to load it.

WeaponArena

Loads an area with three rooms having all the weapons of the game and a trigger that spawns NPC's.

TestPawnShop

Loads a shop interior which loops if you try to leave.

TestCarDealership

Loads a shop interior which loops if you try to leave.

TestDojo

Loads a shop interior which loops if you try to leave.

King

Crashes while trying to load it.

TestMini

Loads the player outside the playable map.

TestPoliceGarage

Loads the precinct garage.

FindInteriors

Crashes while trying to load it.

PolicePrecintDemotion

Loads the police precinct, gives you the police outfit and gets you temporarily demoted.

TestCarDealership_Rundown

Loads a shop interior which loops if you try to leave.

AttractMode

Basically the title screen effect but you have some form of control and pausing ability over it.

GrandCentralStation

Loads that interior.

Unused missions

The case 12, "Police_Challenges" makes it seem like there was a plan to have the player complete a challenge to get skills and such.

Driving Rank

PC_DrivingRank01

Loads an area with the objective "Respond To Call" which requires you reaching the end and the game freezes if you go forward to a certain area - looking around with the debug camera doesn't freeze the game, however. Getting out of the car and running around the edges of the area one can get to the end which again has a door which loads an interior. Getting to the very end of the intended track shows you your time and score and then loads the player to the precinct.

PC_DrivingRank02

Loads an area with the objective "Pursue and Halt" which requires you stopping a car and reaching the end and the game freezes if you go forward to a certain area - looking around with the debug camera doesn't freeze the game, however. Getting out of the car and running around the edges of the area one can get to the end which again has a door which loads an interior. Getting to the very end of the intended track shows you your time and score and then loads the player to the precinct.

PC_DrivingRank03

Loads an area with the objective "Stunt Challenge" which requires you reaching the end and the game freezes if you go forward to a certain area - looking around with the debug camera doesn't freeze the game, however. Getting out of the car and running around the edges of the area one can get to the end which again has a door which loads an interior. Getting to the very end of the intended track shows you your time and score and then loads the player to the precinct.

PC_DrivingRank04

Loads a different layout with the objective "Escape" and no exit anywhere. The game freezes if you go forward a bit - looking around with the debug camera doesn't freeze the game, however. Some props are outside the intended drivable area on the right.

PC_DrivingRank05

Loads the same as the previous with the objective "Survive the Gauntlet" and no exit anywhere. The game freezes if you go forward a bit - looking around with the debug camera doesn't freeze the game, however. Some props are outside the intended drivable area on the right.

Shooting Rank

All 5 maps load the same area which has partly no collision with a different objective and no way to complete it legitimately. PC_ShootingRank01 is "Accuracy Challenge", PC_ShootingRank02 is "Cover Fire", PC_ShootingRank03 is "Stealth Infiltration", PC_ShootingRank04 is "Protect the Innocents" and PC_ShootingRank05 is "Heavy Fire and Avoidance".

Combat Rank

All 5 maps load the same area which has no collision with a different objective and no way to complete it. PC_CombatRank01 is "Time Attack", PC_CombatRank02 is "Hunted", PC_CombatRank03 is "Obstacle Course", PC_CombatRank04 is "Weapons Play" and PC_CombatRank05 is "Survivor".

SC03_M1

Case 14. Loads the main map and gives the objective "Locate Location". Crash prone.

Unused Sounds

Amb_Dummy contains placeholder sounds for a car?

Unused Dialog

Street Racing

Text to speech placeholder dialog for the street promoter.

SR_CR_10_Prom_Annouce.ogg: This circuit wouldn't be complete without a race through Central Park. Tread the green lawn, amigos!

SR_Prom_Start_Go.ogg: Go

SR_Prom_Start_Ready.ogg: Ready

Xbox Version

Apparently, the Xbox build was based off an earlier version of the game, explaining its buggier nature.

  • Chairs when hit will spin indefinitely.
  • The Tommy boss is perhaps the most infamous bug in the game. In the PlayStation 2, GameCube and PC versions the boss is relatively easy. However on Xbox, the window of opportunity of throwing off Tommy from a cargo container is 1 frame. As a result, it's nearly impossible to beat the boss without using a TAS or Unlimited Endurance cheat.
