The Last Ninja is the first of a series which would become a hallmark of 80s computer gaming. The original version is considered one of the most successful — if not the most successful — original games in the C64's history, and is well remembered for its detailed isometric graphics, memorable music, and revolutionary gameplay.

A hidden message from Anthony Lees, one of the game's musicians, can be seen at RAM address 0xBD9D during the Inner Sanctum loading screen:
