Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) is the reskin of Doki Doki Panic that was released in overseas markets to substitute the harder Super Mario Bros. sequel. The latter would eventually be released outside of Japan in Super Mario All-Stars.
Hidden in the tileset for the desert stages is a little smiley face that isn't used anywhere in this game, its prototype, or Doki Doki Panic. It appears to just be a placeholder.
