Sonic the Hedgehog had a difficult development and it could be argued that the glitchy state of the game is proof of this. This can be attributed to Sega rushing the title out for the 15th anniversary of Sonic, plus several members either quitting or being transferred to a different project.
There are several UI elements not shown during regular gameplay, with the most notable being the rainbow gem. This gem was only partially coded before being scrapped. There are also several mission icons not shown.
