Japanese Demo

After managing to access the Square's Preview 5 disc which came with the Japanese version of Legend of Mana, I have taken a look at the Vagrant Story demo which was included. Unfortunately, it mainly showcases the faux trailer which appears as an attract screen in the final game after staying at the start menu for a second time. However, there are still a couple of notable differences between the two trailers.

Notice the Autumn 1999 release date despite the final game being released in Japan in February 2000.

Sadly, it appears as though VSTools, the most accessible resource for viewing game models, will not accept the models from the demo. Otherwise, I would have given a comparison of the Crimson Blade models.

The main music files which are kept in the demo are MUSIC000.DAT, MUSIC025.DAT, MUSIC026.DAT, MUSIC027.DAT, MUSIC028.DAT. MUSIC000.DAT is not used in either the demo or final, and 025-028 line up with the music used in the trailer. I do not have the knowledge on music to elaborate on any more subtle differences, but the later parts of MUSIC025.DAT sound more "rough" in the demo. This is based on my experience viewing the demo. I can only really convert the DAT files to MIDI files right now, so such a conversation will not allow for a fair comparison between versions. Because the DAT files store music in the AKAO format used by most PS1 Square games, it will be an extensive process to rip the music. The most efficient way to compare the two tracks right now will be through a YouTube video.
