Discussion, S3&K Competition Mode activated without debug?

Hi! Today I stumbled onto something weird. While loading into a game at lava reef zone, after having a full game over I got booted back to the title screen only to see competition mode unlocked. It even had proper music which is weird since the article mentioned the music for S3&K was bugged. I am using the USA release, on a Nintendo 3ds XL, so DSi Mode is active. I was wondering if this could be replicated, and if that means anything to the other modes. One thing I do know is I had not completed the game at the time, so I did not pick the level from level select. I also did not have super or hyper sonic at the time, and played with sonic and tails. If I recall I died on Act 2, on the Boss.
