Japanese planet names

Curiously enough, it looks like the Japanese planet names also represent the levels' themes... if you fudge the spelling a bit and read them backwards.

The most obvious ones just added an extra 'e' at the end to make them look a bit better: "Onaclove" (volcano) and "Rewope" (power). (And yes, these were the ones that caused me to come up with this theory in the first place.)

"Neer", on the other hand, goes the opposite direction and drops a letter from green.

"Elykiki" is a bit trickier, but if you replace the K's with C's and drop the Y, it too becomes descriptive: icicle.

"Leatow" is even worse, because it's a respelling that only really works with a Japanese accent-- but knowing that "l"/"r" and "aw"/"o" aren't distinguished in Japanese, you can see how that might have been derived from "retaw" (water).

"Neous" is possibly a really garbled version of "dnuos" (sound)? This one's the biggest stretch, but I'm not sure what else it could be.

I can definitely understand why they changed these in the localized version, given that this took me way too much overthinking to figure out. :) Still, it's an interesting thing to notice...

Four or five fingers

  • Ristar has a five-fingered fist in the Japanese credits. He's supposed to have only four fingers per hand, something that was corrected in the international credits.

Is having five fingers necessarily a mistake, or could it be the result of the documented Japanese cultural aversion to four-fingered hands? For example,

As a result, some (but not all) Western four-fingered characters airing in Japan have to be edited to have a fifth finger...

On the box arts of some of the games, the characters are re-drawn to have an extra finger.

Also it's worth noting that, in the "Aurora Borealis" picture, Ristar has five fingers in both editions.

I'm not 100% sure about that given that Ristar's title screen sprite has four fingers on both the Japanese/Asian and US/European releases. I doubt it's entirely cultural, but it's possible. --From: CounterDiving (talk) 12:11, 4 October 2019 (EDT)
It seems even the artists couldn't keep it straight, because he has five fingers when he's grabbing the logo on the title screen and four when he's idling. On the Japanese box art, one of his hands has four fingers and the other has five. Unless there's a model sheet floating around somewhere, I don't think there's a way to know the "correct" number of fingers.--GoldS (talk) 12:36, 4 October 2019 (EDT)
