Mashing A for Fatalities

Here's an oddity I've always encountered every time I play the game:

Whenever I face Scorpio(n) and Shinnok, in every round, I would just mash the A button to repeatedly kick them to death. But the weird part is - I always somehow end up performing a fatality in the end, for both opponents!

Even stranger: If I lost Round 2, Scorpio(n)/Shinnok is able to perform his fatality, yet Round 3 comes along and I can button-mash to do a fatality anyway!

Does anyone know why the heck something like this would happen? I think it may have something to do with the Spear attack, since these two are the only characters to be able to use it.
