This is a sub-page of Super Mario Sunshine.

Mario

SMS ma demo gate in.gif
SMS ma sinking.gif
SMS ma sink down.gif
Considering Mario's exiting stage animation is called "ma_demo_gate_out", "ma_demo_gate_in" is most likely an unused animation of Mario entering a stage. Similar to the quicksand sinking animation from Super Mario 64- This animation is an unused sinking animation for when Mario walks on the unused "Quicksand Goop". Relating to the sinking animation- this is the final sinking state where Mario completely submerges under the "Quicksand".

Out of the whopping 204 animations for Mario, only three are unused!

Toad Run

SMSToadrun.gif

Toad has an animation for running normally called kinopio_run, which never gets used as the only time Toad runs is when he's worried.

Toadsworth

Toad and Toadsworth share the same number of joints, however, he still has his own set of labelled animations.

SMStoadsworthFall.gif

An animation for falling called kinoji_fall. Falling animations usually relate to NPCs sinking into goop, however Toadsworth is immune to goop.

Sit Sit Talk
SMStoadsworthSit.gif SMStoadsworthSitalk.gif

Animations for sitting both normally (kinoji_sit), and while talking (kinoji_sittalk). These go unused since Toadsworth only sits with a worried sitting animation.

Walk Worry Walk
SMStoadsworthWalk.gif SMStoadsworthWorrywalk.gif

Animations for walking both normally (kinoji_walk), and worried (kinoji_walkororo). These animations go unused since Toadsworth never moves from his set position. He does however walk in the pre-rendered opening cutscene.

Jumping Blooper's Land Legs

Hmmm...
To do:
Document all the animations, and preferably replace the video with gifs.

The spongy squid-like enemy Jumping Blooper only appears in Ricco Harbor, floating in the water. However, it has animations for hopping around on land, being stomped, and more! Jumping Blooper files are included in the King Boo stage, pointing towards this area being one area where they would be seen on land.

Blooper Surfing

SMS Blooper swimming.gif

Bloopers have an unused animation for jumping into the water, then swimming called geso_surf1. While there are rideable Bloopers, those are internally referred to as surfgeso, and are located in the scene\mapobj folder with their own animation for swimming called surfgeso_run1, whereas Blooper enemies are located in scene\rikugesso.

Coo Coo

Down Fall Fall End

Coo Coo has few unused animations- one for landing, and two relating to falling which are different from the single used one when Coo Coo is sprayed with water.

Bullet Bill

Unused Used
SMS BulletRotUnused.gif SMS BulletRotUsed.gif

While this animation itself technically is used by the Bullet Bills during the Bowser fight ("bathtubkiller"), the Bullet Bills on Pinna Beach and in the park ("killer") never rotate, rendering this animation "killer_zrot1" unused.

Proto Piranha

SMS-Gatekeeper-Animation.gif

One leftover animation from the E3 2002 demo exists of a Proto Piranha tilting its head after being awoken, called "gene_pakkun_towait2".

Petey Landing

SMSPeteyland.gif

Petey Piranha is only airborne in Episode 5 of Bianco Hills. Once he is in the air, you must get him down yourself or he will continue his flying cycle or shoot goop balls at you. Despite this, he has an animation for landing on his own called bosspaku_land.

Chain Chomp

Wakeup

SMS-ChainChompAnimation.gif

Chain Chomp has one unused animation for waking up called bwanwan_wakeup, which also has a corresponding texture animation of the same name for blinking. There is a sleeping animation called bwanwan_sleep used when Chain Chomp is resting in the bath, however he is never pulled out of the bath, so it's unknown how this animation could've been used.

  • There are a few similar Chain Chomp animations which are used, including it shaking to pull the chain's stake out of the ground, re-igniting, and getting thrown into the bath.

Gold Chain

SMS-ChainChompChainGold.gif

An unused texture animation which colors Chain Chomp's chain gold. When Chain Chomp gets cooled in the bath its body changes from black to gold, however its chain despawns, rendering this animation unused.

Stu Generator

The drawing that spawns Strollin' Stus was originally going to be alive and animated to some degree. It has five texture animations, each making use of alternate textures. The first image is the texture that is used. The second is used for when the generator is being hurt. The third is for after the generator has taken damage, thus entering an angry state. The last image is when the generator dies. In the final game, the drawing simply disappears when sprayed.

Waterwheel

Unused Used
SMS-Waterwheel Animation 2.gif SMS-Waterwheel Animation.gif

The large waterwheel in Bianco Hills is hardcoded to rotate, however it has an unused animation which rotates the wheel 25% slower.

Bianco Bell

SMS biabell.gif

The bells in Bianco Hills use four animations labelled "biabella" through "biabelld". However, a non-suffixed fifth animation exists named biabell which is unused.

Sandleaf

Set End
SMS sandleaf set.gif SMS sandleaft end.gif

The small leafy plant in Gelato Beach that raises a staircase when sprayed has two unused animations- sandleaf_set, which presumably is the leaf spawning, and sandleaf_end.

Pinna Park's Door Opening

SMS PinnaDoorAnimation.gif

Pinna Park's door is always already either closed, or open- never does it animate either state. However, the open door model, pinnadooropen, has an unused animation of the door opening.

Glass Panel Shatter

SMS-glassbreak.gif

The glass panels in Hotel Delfino have a shattering animation, though they don't shatter upon being ground-pounded, but rather disappear with a puff of dust.

Blue Panel Shatter

Panel break.gif

Like the glass panels- the blue panels in the attic of Hotel Delfino don't shatter upon ground-pounding either.

SMS-FlagSmol.png SMS-FlagBeeg.png

The Pianta flag used when racing Il Piantissimo has one unused waving animation called monteflag which is identical to the final waving animation... but small!

Mud Boat

SMS-MudBoatAnim.gif

While technically not unused- the Mud Boat has a texture animation which animates the mud, however it only animates for a brief moment while the boat is crashing or sinking.

Stalagmite

SMS-Stalagmite.gif

The stalagmites in Corona Mountain have an unused firey animation.

Bowser's Bath Tub

Bowser's bath tub from the final battle has three animations that play one after another to flip the bath tub after Bowser is defeated, called bath_overturn1, bath_overturn2 and bath_overturn3. There is also a fourth, unused animation, simply called bath_overturn, which looks noticeably rougher around the edges. This was probably an early version of the bath tub flipping that was scratched in favor of the three animations used in the final game.

The final battle also has an unused camera sequence that was likely meant to go with the unused animation, called koopa_last. It's almost identical to the used camera sequence, koopa_last2, except it's noticeably shorter, running for the same amount of time as bath_overturn. If the used animations and camera sequence are replaced with koopa_last and bath_overturn, the cutscene plays similar except the Shine Sprite and all characters except for Bowser and Bowser Jr. are stuck at coordinates (0, 0, 0) and the bath tub turns back up after flipping.

Unknown Boat Animation

Hmmm...
To do:
Possibly access this animation.

In the Delfino Plaza scene\fruitsboat folder is an animation labelled shipdolpic, which shares the same name as the model of the boats in Delfino Plaza. This animation is a slightly earlier version of the animation shipdolpic2- an also unused animation featuring a bouncing awning.

Dummy Camera Files

Located in common.szs\camera are 20 empty ".btk" camera animation files labelled dummy0 through dummy19.
